It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

This was the best series of the season. If it had been on prime time where it had been noticed by more viewers, it would have been number one in the ratings. What a bummer to lose it! I wish FX had tried one more season to promote it better. The acting, the production, the direction…all top notch. And, the thing is, I don’t even like or watch boxing, ordinarily. It’s just that this series is multi-dimensionally exquisite!
Sad to hear about the cancellation. I really enjoyed the show.
Like everyone else I am disappointed that FX gave up on Lights Out I agree it is one of the best shows on tv well written and the actors make the characters so believable; because the show reflects the realism of that world and what its really like in front of the camera as well as behind closed doors. We should all ban together and form a peition to keep the show on the air since we all feel this strongly lets ban together and give our support remember strength in numbers!!!!!
I’m not sure why this show didn’t catch on with viewers. Maybe there should have been more fighting in the first view episodes then the promise of more would have kept viewers involved with the back story. I’m really disappointed as I would have liked to see where it went from here. My wife and I as well as my sons who are away at college were already speculating on next season. Maybe they should have had a crime investigator in the family. That seems to be the only thing that grabs viewers and network execs. Good writing and acting… Read more »
I can’t believe this, I looked foward to this show every week. All these stupid reality shows are taking up to much air time, like the *** boy “The Bachleor”! I would buy the rest of the seasons if someone knows where I could get them.
I thought this series was awesome. The characters were great except for the wife. The brother was terrific. The dialogue and the writing were first rate. I’m going to really miss this show.
I have found Lights Out to be a very good show becoming a great addition to FX’s already goof lineup. I believe many people were turned away by the simple fact that it was a boxing show, that it would be a Rocky extended into a series. They didn’t realize the key to the show is analysis of the characters and their growth as they face their individual crises. What a shame that a fitting cast that ahs done all it can to arouse emotion out of us has been kicked to the curve because of marketing failures.
I thought the show was great fx is stupid for canceling it and everyone who didn’t watch it really missed out
I just got into the show about two weeks ago. My brother and I loved it and after just watching the finale I wanted to see if there was going to be a second season. I’m really disappointed it was canceled. I wish I started watching it sooner.
do not end this series!!
I loved this show, i never missed a show and sometimes called into work sick to watch this show. I hate to see it go if they do decide to not bring it back! Lights Out crew i love your work!
My hubby and I loved it. Now what? So many great plots and saga’s. A must continue!!! please
That sucks. Please bring it back. Great story line. Don’t want to have wasted my time getting attached to show just for it to end. What happens. Still worth watching even though they May not bring it back..
I looked forward to Tuesday just to watch Light Out. Think any other network will pick it up like they did for Southland?
Appears to me more advertising dollars spent on getting the word out about Light Out would have helped viewership.
I love Lights Out. It was a really good TV series.
