It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

Lights Leary was an awesome character. We loved the show – such a great change from the usual cop, lawyer, realty stuff that’s on TV these days. I don’t know who makes these decisions to keep or cancel a show – but you guys missed on this one.
“Lights Out” was unquestionably the best boxing story to come along since “Raging Bull.” It makes the Rocky series seem like a Disney adventure by comparison. The suits were chicken, cut the cord too soon forgetting the fact that “Seinfeld” tanked in the ratings its first season. And “The Sopranos” didn’t top the charts its first season either. Perhaps a network with chutzpah or cahones will pick it up?
WOW…..WTF happened here..?????? I’m shocked…how could FX simply give up on a drama of this magnitude so damned quickly? Was it the cast that did not attract viewers. I mean I have seen Pablo Schreiber (spelled it correctly..?) in other series and Stacy Keach as well. Holt McCallany was “true to form” and very convincing as a “boxer” making his comeback but always showing his “sensitive” nature towards his loving family. I truly enjoyed watching this series every Tuesday night at 10PM like clockwork same as I watch “Justified”. Now it makes me wonder if FX will “pull the plug”… Read more »
I am so ******* pissed it is not coming on anymore it was a great show
Too bad now all I got is over the top biker gangs and a real GREAT Drunk as HELL fireman and he’s calling it quits too…..
I guess its time to go netflixs
cause I got a couple of hundred channels and NOTHINGS ON!
I think this is complete BS! Out of all the stupid things Americans watch and they cancel the best show of the year. So yall have fun with all the CSI’s which are all the same. How many times will everyone watch the same show over and over and not even realize it’s a repeat.
Disappointed to see it end. “Lights Out” might not have been a truly great, can’t-miss classic, but c’mon — it was better than 90% of the dreck on TV (“Lights Out” gets cancelled, but “Jersey Shore” lives on…? Please.) and deserved another year to continue to grow and develop.
I am SOOO sad to hear the news that Light’s Out will be cancelled. My boyfriend and I watched and love this show religiously every week. I like all the characters and thought this last week’s episode where the Mom shows up was brilliant. So bummed right now!
My fiancee and I watched this show faithfully. We are NOT big tv show watchers and rarely get involved but this one was absolutely one of the best I have seen in years….We will miss it greatly. So sad to find out after watching the season finale that that was it….
I got home and my wife told me that she read the info for Lights Out when she was setting up the reminder to watch it, and told me that it was the series finale. I didn’t believe her so I looked for myself. I was highly upset and figured okay it was just a mini-series. Then I come to work and read that it got cancelled due to low ratings? Ever since The Shield I have looked foward to new shows on FX because they are edgy and separate themselves from the average tv show. I am very dissapointed… Read more »
I loved the show and the characters. I am very disappointed that it is being cancelled. I loved Holt McCallany as a boxer who kept in over his head while trying to take care of his family. I hope to see him in another show soon.
I’m extremely disappointed with FX for canceling Lights Out. It was a terrific drama and a welcome break from the normal mish-mash of lawyer and crime shows that are innundating television these days. It will be sorely missed.
This was a great show, I’m very disappointed that it’s cancelled. Over There was also a good show, Enrique, I agree. The problem I have is that this show got almost NO advertising once it had premiered. There was some buzz about it leading up, but nothing afterward. My question is, they put the show on Tuesday nights opposite other critically-acclaimed, highly-rated NETWORK shows (Parenthood and The Good Wife), and for much of the season was also up against a hit TNT show (Southland, picked up from NBC) so number 1, how were they surprised about the ratings, and number… Read more »
I am really sad to see this really good show cancelled. It was such a welcome break from the generic cops, lawyers, and stupid reality shows that are shoved down our throats. Every week left us anxious for the next episode. It would have been nice to not leave us hanging. I would really love to know what happened next to these great characters.
I agree, it was a fresh breath of air from all the reality shows that invade our TV’s each week.
They did the same thing a few years back with the show “Over their” not sure if any of you guys watched it.. But it was a show about a platoon in Iraq. I loved that show and couldnt waiti to watch it every week.. Of course that one never came back.
I know what you mean, I loved “Over There” and it sucks even more to see that there won’t be any more “Lights Out”..
