It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

The Pilot Episode of Lights Out was one of the greatest shows I had ever seen. Lights as a character was just someone you HAD to root for. I’m a boxing junkie so that’s what originally drew me to the show. But the acting and writing was very good, this was a very good show, much better than all the cookie cutter cop/detective shows on television right now. I loved this show, and although it seemed like Lights’ comeback was rushed a bit too soon, I’m now glad it was so we could see Lights fight Reynolds before the show… Read more »
This show was truly among the greats. It had a terrific story line that kept people captivated and wondering what was going to happen next. FX has made a poor decision. Boxing is one sport that has been on the back burner for way to long. MMA (UFC) has taken the lime light andthis show, I was hoping, would bring boxing back into people’s minds. I really hope FX changes their minds or another network picks it up. There are enough people that watch it to justify a network’s cost to make it…
Such a shame..a great show. My brothers and my friends all were into it too…we would hang out on Tuesday night together to watch it. This sucks…wasn’ even given a fighting chance. Everybody only wants to watch ish like three and a half men. Crap like that ruins it for shows like “lights out”
yeah, cancel this awesome show, but keep all the bad “reality” tv and horrible sitcoms on the air. most people wouldnt know good tv, even if you spread your cheeks and crapped it right onto their chests. at least this show didn’t sell out, didn’t become an hour long subway commercial like Chuck.
I can’t believe this show is being cancelled! My hasband and I love this show. This is the first show in a while that we make sure we don’t miss!! Love the characters and the storyline! This is one that has no business being cancelled. What can we do to get it back???? BIG mistake!
well thats a poor decision from FX. Such a refreshing change to see an old fashioned type TV series put on amongst the chaos of the reality cr*p and all the over the top series on all the other channels. I was hoping that Lights Out would finish after 2 seasons so to not ruin the story line by dragging it out. But it definitely needed another series and FX seem to have made the decision very rashly. They should have rerun it over the summer to get more and more interest and then started on the 2nd and final… Read more »
This was one of our favorite shows. We couldn’t wait to see it, and the hour always ended too early! There is still a lot of story line left here. Could at least be another season with many possibilities. Where do we sign a pettion to bring it back?
My husband & I loved the show! The finale is a cliff hanger – shouldn’t have ended the way it did – the producers probably did that since they cancelled – rotten ending.
We want more. I think they did poorly because of the time slot – who introduces a show at that time – FX does – they did that with Southland – another really great show & that is done.
I am not happy that “Lights Out” is being cancelled. It was terrific and my husband
and I watched it from the beginning and enjoyed it every week. There is so more to be revealed in the story line for Patrick and it’s a shame to see it end.
It should be given another chance! Bring it back!
This blows my mind. While the series was more of an extended movie — an improvement of the Rocky series with a lot more viewer attachment to the main character, I still think even a first-time viewer would have came back for the remaining episodes even if they only tuned in half-way through the series. With that bring said, I think the producers could, in the least, contemplate improvements for the next series. I would hate to see this series go — especially with a cliff hanger like that. But then again, maybe people aren’t ready for a show that… Read more »
I am furious! I loved this show, knowing they had a great script they leave you wondering what could happen for the second season…. nothing because they ****** cancelled it. I lost alotta respect for FX, ppl will burn for cancelling this show!
One of my fav shows in last 10 years. Can’t believe they cancelled it- IDIOTS, hoping someone picks it up- show was GREAT!
the show is great!! why!?
Such a shame. This is one of my favorite shows. One of the few shows I actually make sure i’m home on time to watch. Great acting, great storyline. I’m baffled as to how this show got such poor ratings.
Lights out is an amazing show. it is one of the best boxing shows. i think this is a big mistake. the rating will pick up, BRING IT BACK i need to no more
