It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

this show needs to come back and if not i am boycotting fx until they do so. terrible idea
I can’t believe it’s cancelled! I love the show, the cast, etc…. Now I will never know what happens to Patrick. I really hope that there is a station out there that will see how wonderful this show is and give it another chance. I will miss the cast, the story….my heart and soul was into every episode and this is what I get? Good luck to all that brought the Leary clan to life, to bad they were killed off so soon 🙁
Sad to see it go- good show!! Maybe they should have tried airing it on a real channel instead of a not so hot channel as FX- I only stumbled across it flipping through the 800 channels we have bored one night.
I think the problem was that not enough people knew about it! More build up would have gotten more people to watch. Story was fascinating.
this show was the only thing on t.v that was worth watching. another stupid season of idol starts and a good show comes off the air. lights out had everything. I have seen so many good shows come and go…this was the only show that i actually cared about, and made sure i was home to watch every tuesday night. i hate f/x.
LOVED the show! Very sorry to see that it was cancelled. Please bring it back. I felt like part of the Leary family!
I am so very disappointed that Lights Out will not be returning. I enjoyed every show and just know it would catch on eventually. There were no advertisements and nothing in the newspaper or TV Guide to alert the public about it and get more viewers. This is the one and only show I watch on FX and just stumbled on it one evening. I recently got my mother hooked on it AND a friend of hers who was involved in Golden Gloves years ago. They are both very disappointed that it is ending when they just started watching it.… Read more »
I LOVED THE SHOW SO DID MY WIFE AND ALL MY FRIENDS. SAD THAT IT IS NOT BEING GIVEN A 2ND SHOT FOR SUCCESS. IT WAS AND IS A GREAT GREAT SHOW
My husband & I absolutely love lights out!!! We recorded this series & were looking fwd to a season 2. Maybe they will reconsider!? 🙁
big mistake….this show got better as the season progressed…..worth at least one more mini-season…..kind of like leverage…that show took awhile…and now it is a staple..fjp
I can’t believe FX isen’t going to give Lights a second shot, can another station pick it up? I looked forward to seeing the show every week and I’m glad I recorded all of the episodes on dvr. There is so many different directions season two could spin to. I don’t think the producers gave the season much of a chance going to two seasons by making Patrick have a brain related injury, but that was their fault not the viewers.
fx created yet another great show and gave it no time to build momentum. There was a lot more they could have done with it, yet they chose to cancel after one season. they should have given it more time.
Really sad to see it go. This is one of the better dramas I’ve seen in a while. The acting was solid, the characters were compelling and the script was excellent. When a series like this gets bad ratings, it speaks volumes about the average viewer’s lack of sophistication. Although some things were left unresolved I kind of liked the tragic conclusion. It’s the kind of ending that you usually only find in really good literature.
I read some of the other comments, and agree with most. ‘Lights Out’ was a wonderful show with involving characters, especially Holt. We will see him again. What exactly is the rating bar for F/X? Apparently any show not filled with fake boobs, explosions and FaceBook storylines can’t survive in this day and age.
Why doesnt Dana White create another b/s mma program about some guy and his family and then it would stay on the air. most americans jump on the bandwagon and we all love to watch ppl make love to one another on the ground do we not? instead of heart, integrity, discipline… or just some other typical retarded ass reality show or teenage drama. lights out brought back an honest old fashioned feeling of what this country should represent.
