It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

What most viewers want is to be stimulated without any effort from themselves. No moral ambiguity, please – they want it all cut and dried so they can put the ol’ noodle on autopilot and enjoy the cruise. And that’s fine for them. Me, I like a story to be a little hard to understand. Why is the beloved character doing THAT? What on earth is that other fellow that I thought I understood up to? You know, I want to dance with it, not just zone out on it. Lights made me dance.
PPPPLLLLLEEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring back Lights Out what a horrible end the season 1 finale would be to what had the making of a great series when are people going to realize nobody watches live tv any more everyone tivos dvrs netflix or watches online Americans are too busy these days to set down at a certain time on a certain night STOP canceling great shows over ratings that mean nothing and don’t give me the BS about advertising even if u watch live u don’t watch commercials u flip the channel refill ur drink or go to the bathroom thats what… Read more »
My husband and I loved this show! We would love to see more. The characters were perfect. Hope FX changes their decision.
Boo! Fox!!
Lights Out was solid television.
So instead, replace it with family guy repeats or reality tv crap?!?!
Keep your integrity, have faith in lights!
Bring Lights Back!
That show rocked. I love MMA, but I am a little tired of all of it. Lights out was bringing back the old days when everyone loved watching boxing and what all fighters had to go through. This sucks!
So sad it’s not coming back! My husband and I watched it every week! Wish they would reconsider!!!!
Lights out is a great show it definitely needs to come out with a second season
Really enjoyed the show, very disappointed its cancelled!
Great drama that is a refreshing change from looking at “beautiful babe” M.E.’s dissecting dead bodies. Revive season 2. I am totally shocked as I watch all the crap dramas and comedies that get more than one show, much less deserve multiple seasons. Come on guys and gals.
Well, this just sucks. It was an excellent show, in fact, the only show I made time to watch over the past three months. A very poor decision. It sometimes takes time for a show such as this to catch on. Just think of how stupid it was years ago to cancel a classic such as Twin Peaks!
This sucks! I love lights out! I was looking forward to next season.
LO was a good show, but it was annoying to watch the ‘hero’ make stupid decisions. A flawed protaganist is one thing, but a guy who just ‘goes along’ with what mobsters want, and agrees to perform ilicit ‘collection and delivery’ activities is not someone I think people really enjoy rooting for. I kept wanting Lights to turn a corner and get on the right path, but I never really saw that (though there seemed to be hope of that in the last episode). I have a feeling that this contributed to the poor ratings. That said, I was interested… Read more »
This was a great show. At least we got to see the result of the DR/Lights match before it was canceled.
My husband and I loved this show. Great acting and captivating storyline. Very disappointed in the FX executives to cancel the show. Hopefully they will reconsider their poor decision
My husband and I love lights out, we watch every week and love the story line both the boxing come back but also the family relationships. Were very sad FX cancelled it, please FX reconsider!!!
