It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

I never missed an episode and I don’t even own a working TV; had to download each episode at a cost of $2.99 each. Maybe that is a new option for high quality shows that can’t find a broad demographic. I boxed a little (cost me an eye) and I thought the show was terrific. Those who complain about too few fight scenes miss the point entirely. This wasn’t a show about boxing per se; it was a show about the world of boxing, about the world’s disenfranchised fighting the vagaries of life and its injustice. To watch boxing find… Read more »
loved show wished bring it back
I wished Ed would of came back for the last fight. That fool was crazy.
are you kidding?? This was a great show!!!
This was a interesting show i never got a chance to watch it on tv ! i always logged on to hulu.com to watch the show ! I dont think it was sucessful due to the time and day it air! fx channel could have promoted it on commercial more often! overall i think on fox channel it would have been a hit show! as was prisonbreak !
Too bad Holt couldn’t have knocked out Kate Gossenlin and a few others.
All the fans should contact TNT and AMC to see if they will pick-up either show. TNT saved Southland, another great show. AMC has The Walking Dead and The Killing, two other good shows. Maybe one of these networks can breathe life back into Terriers and Lights.
FX is once again dumping a great show (Terriers being the other). I don’t think FX is doing a good job of getting these shows out there. Both Terriers and Lights Out were fresh shows with great actors/characters. I talk about tv shows with numerous co-workers and none of them had even heard of Terriers or Lights but thay watch all the other cable programs on HBO, Showtime, and Starz.
This show is the greatest. It should NOT be cancelled. Great acting, great story, great writing, great casting. Intelligent, well done series. So refreshing for a change to watch a really high quality show. Holt is fantastic. WHY would you cancel it?
Dumb blonds with implants from Jersey get renewed but a smart, intriguing show like “Lights Out” gets cancelled. Go figure. Maybe a smart channel like AMC will pick it up. Visions of “Breaking Bad???”
WOW!!! My son and I looked forward to each episode…It will be missed big time. The story was excellent. It was cool to see inside the business of the boxing world…true or not it kept us coming back for more…great cast, acting and storyline! The way the last episode concluded would be a terrible way to end the show…I hope they bring it back.
What a mistake to let this series go. It takes more than one season to have a series catch on. This was an excellent show with great acting. It would be really interesting to see how season 2 played out.
What a shame.
I am female and I loved this show. I’ve always loved boxing because it is a true sport linked back to the oldest days. I thought it was a really good, true to life show, Holt was such a natural actor, great cast, so sad it went off the air, I couldn’t believe the very last second of the ending. I hope they bring it back…
So sorry this has been cancelled. It was a great show. My husband and I couldnt wait for the next episode. We also miss Nip Tuck.
This show was great. Excellent acting and story. I think it was a tv show about boxing (violence also) that had too little action. Season 1 could have had another fight or two to lead up to the finale with Deathrow. The sport of boxing isn’t as popular anymore especially in the younger demographics. That cuts out a large part of the audience for most sports shows.
the public is fickle—-it was a superb drama—I enjoyed Lights Leary personality.
Katherine McCormack was as” fine” as she could be. It was a pleasure to see Stacy Keach in a significant spotlight—he’ll always be Mike Hammer. Deathrow was well cast as well.
There is a void on t.v. without this show. It was probably going to take time to gain an
audience.
too bad
