TV show description:
In the futuristic year of 1997, the world is suffering from over-population and a lack of natural resources. A team is chosen to travel to Alpha Centauri in the Jupiter 2 spaceship to search for a new world to colonize.
The team consists of Professor John Robinson (Guy Williams), his biochemist wife Maureen (June Lockhart) and their friend and pilot, Major Don West (Mark Goddard). Traveling with them are the Robinson children; Don’s girlfriend Judy (Marta Kristen), middle child Penny (Angela Cartwright), and child prodigy Will (Bill Mumy).
After the Robinsons have been placed in suspended animation for the long journey, foreign agent Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) sneaks aboard to sabotage the mission. Instead, he becomes trapped on the ship during the launch and his extra weight throws the ship off course, causing the Jupiter 2 and its inhabitants to become lost in space.
Though the Robinsons eventually achieve an unlikely alliance with him, the cowardly and duplicitous Dr. Smith frequently tries to make deals with aliens to return him home, often at the expense of his fellow castaways.
The ship’s friendly robot (Bob May, voiced by Dick Tufeld) sometimes helps Dr. Smith but more often ruins his plans.
Lost in Space also tried to compete with the abc Batman TV Show which was a mistake on their part. Space got just as silly as Batman did. And fans of both shows got tired of the silly antics of both shows and then Batman and Lost in Space got cancelled do to low viewer ratings. Batman went over board with the silly plots and so did Space with Dr>Smith’s silliness. Had LIS stuck to its original premis it might have lasted a fourth… Read more »
I’m afraid you have been misinformed on some of the information about the end of LIS.
The ratings for the third season was the series best, and a fourth season WAS planned. In fact, the actors showed up for work on the first day of what was supposed to be the first day of production, but were told the show was cancelled by Irwin Allen because he wanted to move on to other things. Since Allen owned all production rights for the program at that time, replacing him was not an option.
I Love Lost in Space.& Star Trek.
why was Lost in Space only on for 3years? thank yu, MS. France’s Yozawitz.
It wasn’t attracting enough viewers so it was cancelled.
Because viewers got tired of seeing Dr. Smith steeling the show all or most of the time. And the other Robinson members Maureen, Judy, John Robinson, got lesser rools and less to do. Only the B9 Robot, Will, & Penny got more air time. The other actors got short changed in later episodes. But, just seemed to take it in stride. Space got renewed for a fourth season but, Irwin Allen had to cut the budget or it was no go. Irwin Allen refused to cut the budget and walked out on the meeting at CBS. And as a result… Read more »
