The Devil is the details, so let’s be clear the Lucifer TV show on FOX has not been cancelled. That said, the season two episode order has been reduced from 22 episodes to 18. The picture’s not as hellish as the bare facts might imply. The decision to shorten season two was made for creative and scheduling reasons.
A fantasy comedy-drama, Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar. The FOX cast also includes D.B. Woodside, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, Lesley-ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, Tricia Helfer, and Aimee Garcia. It seems all 22 episodes of season two have already been made, and the final four are character-driven stand-alone episodes which are easier to shift.
Executive producer and Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson explained in a series of tweets that they had originally expected an 18 episode second season and mapped out the story accordingly. When FOX ordered 22 episodes of Lucifer season two, instead, he and the writing team crafted four extra episodes that allowed them to delve more deeply into the characters.
While Henderson isn’t certain if season three will consist of 22, 24, or 26 episodes, Deadline reports that the four episodes in question should be in addition to the 22 episodes already ordered for Lucifer season three on FOX.
The second season of Lucifer has been averaging a 1.10 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.83 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 25% in the demo and down by 16% in total viewers. Find out how Lucifer stacks up against the other FOX TV shows.
Lucifer Showrunner Joe Henderson Talks About Reduced Season Two Episode Count
For #Lucifer, we will be airing the last 5 episodes of season 2 in May! 5 you say?? But the show is 22?? Where are my remaining 4 episodes?
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
Well, we designed this season to be an 18 episode arc because we originally were going to be 18 episodes. But then we got 4 more! Surprise!
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
So we decided to create four episodes that let us play around a bit. Dig deeper into the character stories, play with format a bit, etc.
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
We didn't know whether they'd air this season or next until now. Now we do. So bad news is you need to wait for them. And I know that sucks.
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
But the good news is we'll have at LEAST 22 episodes of Lucifer next season. Maybe 26?? Probably 24? Hard to say this early #Lucifer
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
We're doing four episodes that stand on their own, but also pick up plots we've introduced and bring in new stuff we'll play with season 3 https://t.co/AcUryFzZ2m

Honestly, they love the show, they just didn't have anywhere to air the extra episodes until the fall. https://t.co/Oziy9LhmAS
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
We know where they'll slot season 3, and how they'll affect story/etc. They won't feel very standalone because they are so character focused https://t.co/9DeSxdpwPH
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
End of season 2 is still exactly what we planned. And it is CRAZY awesome, if you don't mind me saying so. #Lucifer https://t.co/uVwBBwPt0d

What do you think? Are you a fan of the Lucifer TV show? Are you disappointed season two will end after 18 episodes, or are you more looking forward to an extended third season on FOX?
We get 10 episodes and then a hiatus, we then get 3 episodes and then a longer hiatus, and now we get 5 episodes and then another hiatus before Season 3 begins. While we Luci fans are loyal there comes a point when enough is enough.
This is no way to treat a show that is original, extremely well written, plotted, good development of characters, multi-themed, etc.
All that being said if there is no drops in the ratings I am sure that FOX will do the same thing to Lucifer next season as it did this season.
Agree with Elaine. We get a few episodes then a break. We get a few more , then another break. Stop with the breaks already. I won’t loose fanship but many are fickle and move away. This is a fun show. Best thing for me since another network cancelled Castle of which I was a fan for eight seasons. I am loyal. Others are not. Please keep giving us what you started. Looking forward to season 3!!
My name is Italia
I been watching lucifer since it started ,I been waiting and waiting for it to be on ,I keep looking when.! I love watching him and his funny comments
He’s so sexy. My husband rolls his eyes when I say he’s coming on soon I can’t wait. :).
Love the show.
glad its not cancelled.!! thats the reason i dont buy season DVD, any more.!! not till i see a fourth season. to many cancellations.!!
Unlike some shows “Lucifer ” doesn’t dumb down the writing. I love the show and how small details like the music selection or other incidental things add to the understanding of what is happening. Many times they can be important to future episodes so you have to watch mindfully. But why do they have to split up the season so much between episodes? Would love to hear director cuts and comments somewhere to add more depth to the viewer’s understanding of plot, characters, etc… Watching reruns then could help you look for things you may have missed and it is… Read more »
the problem with fox, is they split their
series in half, they must hire ABC rejects, really crapping scheduling, and
they wonder why?, when series viewage declines?, DUH?
That is what I was saying in another comment. Viewers loose track or don’t have patience to wait it out. I’m not one of those. I do wait it out. That’s when you loose viewers. Let Fox get smart and realize what happens here. Don’t pull an ABC and have a barrage of complaints on their hands.
Please please bring it back “Lucifer ”
My husband and I we love it
And how can we get all of the seasons on
DVD who’d love to get them all
Can you tell us when series 3 will start please? I love the show and ,by the way, I’m 62 not one of your younger viewers.
I’ve got you beat Pamela, I’m seventy and out of the demos that the networks look at. Which I feel is discrimination of the advertisers but I can’t fix that.
Sorely disappointed there’s only 5 left! This show is a true addiction, can’t get enough! So then all we get is 5 more and to wait MONTHS to see the rest, it just isn’t fair, I will lose my mind!
Oh so glad Lucifer has not been canceled! I look forward to this show every week and miss it when on hiatus.
