Last month, we reported news out of Comic-Con that the retooled MacGyver TV show reboot on CBS wants to bring on the original Angus MacGyver — Richard Dean Anderson — in some fashion. The new series stars Lucas Till in the title role. The cast also includes George Eads, Sandrine Holt, Justin Hires, and Tristan Mays.
Reporting from the TCA summer presser for CBS, The Wrap writes showrunner Peter Lenkov said the new production has been talking to Anderson’s reps, adding, “We hope he says yes.” Lenkov executive produces with Craig O’Neill, James Wan, Henry Winkler, Lee Zlotoff, and Michael Clear. Last month though, in response to the Comic-Con based stories, Anderson sounded decidedly unwilling to have anything to do with the new MacGyver.
Check out the pair of notes Anderson sent to RDAnderson.com site runner Kate Ritter, which she posted on July 24th and 25th.

MACGYVER REBOOT
July 24, 2016Last October it was announced that CBS Television Studios was preparing to reboot MacGyver as a series for television.
The production has undergone a number of changes and revisions, and last week at Comic-Con in San Diego, the producers and cast introduced the new series and mentioned that they had “reached out” to Richard Dean Anderson. Since then, there has been much speculation about whether Richard would be involved in the project in some way.
Richard offered his perspective first in a brief text, notable mostly for his completely unexplained use of a “disco” icon as his signature.

Wylie is just arriving, so this is a teaser:
Huge overhaul of personnel at the new MacGyver: producers, writers, actors, etc. The promo people for CBS/MacGyver called my agent to see if I would be interetsted in helping to promote their show.
I’ll email you tomorrow-ish… my girl is here!

“NOTE FROM RICK” Richard followed up his earlier text with an email in which he explained why he would not be appearing in the new MacGyver reboot.
MACGYVER REBOOT
July 25, 2016July 25, 2016
So many people have responded to the attempted “reboot” of the MacGyver franchise, and a lot of people have asked me if I’m going to be in the new show, or am I going to produce it, or, yada.
And all I can say is, I’m not considering being a part of a project that has overlooked the insanely LOYAL FANS of the original character and has proceeded without considering how and why they all became and STAYED loyal fans…
Yes, I was asked, but no, I won’t be involved in the MacGyver reboot. I have tried to recognize that there really is a balance to be found here. Hence, my loyalty to my fans.
Anderson, Rick
(Anderson’s words bolded above, for emphasis.)
Sure, things can and do change. Perhaps CBS can build a trap out of a paperclip, kitchen twine, bubble gum, duct tape, and some cold hard cash, to snare the original recipe Mac. MacGyver premieres Friday, September 23, 2016 on CBS.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the old MacGyver TV show? If Anderson takes a role in the reboot, would it make you more likely to watch?
I understand his viewpoint. And from what I got from the first new MacGyver episode was that they’d discarded lots of his old qualities: especially his priceless Boy Scout and loving attitude. That was one of my favorite parts of the original Mac. Given I haven’t an episode since the pilot, it is possible that this can/has changed, and if it does then I’d love to see Mr. Anderson comeback as Mac’s Grandfather Harry or Jack, but seeing him as Harry would be awesome!
I loved the original but that doesn’t stop me from watching the reboot! I have enjoyed both and would love to see a guest appearance from RDA!!
I would like very much for Richard Dean Anderson to participate in the show, even if just one episode
I’m really really really hoping that Richard Dean Anderson decides to participate in the show, even if one episode they would have some sort of closure to his participation in this project
Richard Dean Anderson can play Jack.
the guy who played JACK is not going to in another season.Richard Dean Anderson plays as jask
Watched original series and understand times have changed. Like the new Mcgyver and would have loved to have seen Richard Dean Anderson playing the dad.
I loved the first Macqyver, and I like the new show, but if Richard Dean Anderson returned as part of the new show that would be so awesome. I really hope R.D.A. comes into the show this 3rd season as he could teach the new actors some new MacQyver tricks of the trade. How can I help make this happen in some way? Come on R.D.A. join this show. PLEASE!!
Just saw the episode where MacGyver’s dad was introduced. SUPER disappointed that Richard Dean Anderson wasn’t the dad. I don’t really care to watch the series anymore. Also SUPER disappointed that the original Jack Dalton wasn’t in it as well. Missed opportunities. Without the originals, I feel like it just makes it a rip off of MacGyver; not a continuation.
I Richard Dean Anderson loves his fans like he says he does then he shouldn’t have a problem with giving the fans what they want, to see him guest appear on the new show! I’m am his biggest fan ever and I love the new show! Richard do the right thing and appear!? Don’t leave a bad taste in those fans mouth that have loved you and followed you all these years! I know for a fact others feel the same way I do! Please let us enjoy the person you have become to be! Don’t lose a majority of… Read more »
I love the new reboot of the original I used to watch. I would have loved to see Richard Dean Anderson have a roll as the Dad now. Can still love the original and appreciate the new version.
I love his comment! And it’s true. It saddens me how people want to profit off a good old idea and **** all over it and ruin it because they can’t think of anything new. I admire him even more now than I already did. Such a great actor!!! =)
I’ve just watched an episode of the new MacGyver series. I’m a loyal Richard Dean Anderson fan & I’ll stay one. The new one is okay but obviously isn’t really like the old one. This Mac isn’t like MacGyver at all- language , behaviour & that hairdo looks like a wig. The producers would have done better to give this capable cast a fresh story to work with. If Richard Dean Anderson were a part of it , it would have been palatable even enjoyable.
I am a loyal fan, but it would be awesome just to see Richard Dean Anderson on the Reboot just a bit. I will always be loyal to Rick no matter what i miss seeing him.
Love the show loved the origanl show a lot still watch the origanl on DVD (copied from Vhs tapes that I had taped the OTA broadcast on). I have yet to decide if I like new as well as the old one seems to me there quickly going over the origanl series tonight 2/2/18 episode not only has a nod to the origanl with the origanl Murdoc appearing this episode reminders me of Halloween episode where Murdoc and mac work together to help rescue Murdoc daughter from H.I.T. . I not completely sure why Richard dean Anderson thinks the new… Read more »
