ABC has done very well with their political drama, Scandal. Will Madam Secretary be a similar ratings hit for CBS? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled? Stay tuned.
On Madam Secretary, former CIA analyst Elizabeth McCord (Tèa Leoni) returns to public life after being recruited by the President (Keith Carradine) to become the new Secretary of State. The rest of the cast includes Željko Ivanek, Bebe Neuwirth, Geoffrey Arend, Patina Miller, Erich Bergen, Tim Daly, Katherine Herzer, and Evan Roe.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
1/12 update: Madam Secretary and two other shows have been renewed for a second season by CBS.
Final season averages: 1.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 11.82 million total viewers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Due to a Nielsen glitch, some of the early ratings of the 2014-15 season were revised a couple weeks later.
Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the Madam Secretary TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for season two?
loving the show
Please don’t cancel “Madam Secretary” as it one of the few intelligent dramas on network tv along with ” The Good Wife”. Tea Leoni is excellent, as are the rest if this talented cast. Given the moronic fare offered on both tv and the movies these days, “Madam Secretary” is a breath of fresh air which reminds me of ” The West Wing” ….another fine drama in the wasteland of mediocrity. Do us who appreciate it a break and do not cancel it, please.
Love the show!
Great show. Appointment viewing. But it does appear that Tea Leoni is carrying the show on her back. But it appears she is up to it.
Give it a chance. Other shows have been given time to get their sea legs with great results.
I sincerely hope this show is not cancelled. I’m hooked, I love it, it has many places it could go, etc. CBS- don’t cancel it!!!!! This is the only show on your network I watch and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Renew for season two!!!!!!!!!
Madame Secretary is a great show, and so far, the whole family can watch it. As far as Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder is concerned, they’ve gone a little bit to far for me with the same sex scenes. I watched my last episodes of those two shows.
Great insight Gina! I just knew I didn’t like it and not just because of it’s blatant promotion for Hillary for 2016. Character development is a serious issue for this show!
The premise for Madam Secretary is great. I would love for it to succeed but the weaknesses are probably overwhelming. • The husband has no character, no personality – other than the calm supporter. And seriously, he refused to give a kid an A to avert a national crisis. Give me a break. • The teenage daughter drops out of school to become a restaurant hostess? Just lame. The blogger job opportunity could have spun off some very high political drama. • The young kids are wasted air time. • The President visits Tea at home to get her to… Read more »
Funny how all the bad comments don’t make the first page. 30 comments and only 7 appear on page one, all positive. Yet another thread about another show with 13 comments has all the comments on page one. Just a coincidence I guess, a strange one at that.
Love everything about this show and I love a strong female lead character but like the fact that the supporting characters are also strong!
we obviously did not watch the same show
You have to keep in mind when you watch this show that it is meant to make you a bit uncomfortable, things don’t always work smoothly, the “plan” rarely goes without a “hitch”, and there are always villains even on our own side – if you didn’t see any of that then I guess you must have watched something else. I plan to continue watching and you can feel free not to watch….. it is America after all!
I love how people who like a show automatically think that those who don’t are too stupid to understand it.
Love this show. I am impressed by the storyline and how the characters are provided with real-life encounters in their daily lives.
Great show. Unlike The Good Wife, we don’t really know the politics of this show as it’s mostly been, so far, about issues that aren’t politically motivated. Love the relationship between her and her husband. So tired of bad marriages, divorces, and men generally getting the raw end of the deal in relationships in most “hip” shows. So nice to see a couple who actually love each other, a man who stands by his principles, and a couple who actually work together raising three older children. I think this world needs MORE positive examples like this. I hope it finds… Read more »
we don’t know the politics of the show? Really? Are you kidding me?
The last episode had a “stupid redneck conservative from Texas” HELLOOOO!!! Can you say right out of the liberal playbook. I was surprised they didn’t name her Thomasina Delay The older daughter absolutely went off the rails when the younger sister didn’t bash the lady hard enough.
The show is positively left wing. The show tag line, not politics as usual, is a Hillary campaign sound bite.
if you enjoy the show, fine but please realize that it does have a political agenda.
Sometimes I think your “agenda” is to just bash shows left and right. Almost every comment you make is negative negative negative. Not sure why you bother to even watch shows.
The show is fine. It is a form of entertainment. Thankfully I don’t look for hidden agenda’s every place in my tv shows.
Once again it’s entertainment. Not the best but I don’t sit down and say, “oh my gosh it’s a Hillary campaign.”
It’s a terrific show. One for adults. The first network show I’ve watched regularly in 15 years. It is breaking the mold: it actually raises ethical questions, deals with global politics, and raises the level of discussion above the bedroom! Surely there is a place for this a show. Don’t cancel it – CBS. I and others I know in the target demographic are delighted by a TV show that as one of your own, Ed Murrow, famously said: “This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the… Read more »
the only thing that is going to save this show from cancellation is the fact that it is on Sunday and CBS looks at Sun like Fri. a 1.4 demo is ok. If this was on any other might, it would be gone.
the show inspires people to change the channel.
I love this show – renew, renew, renew!
We love the show…and the actors in it. So much in fact that we paid for the first three episodes on Amazon. We plan on taping the show in the future as Sundays are a nightmare since all of my favorite shows are on at the same time. So we ordered another DVD-DVR player and now can tape four shows at once and not be subjected to all those commercials. PLEASE , PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS SHOW OFF THE AIR!!!!
