Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

This was one of the worst series finales I’ve ever seen. Actually most of this season was written pretty poorly so perhaps that’s why the writers gave up so early on.
I agree with Lianne. My husband and I had no idea this was the finale. We have been devoted watchers for a long time, and this episode did not make sense until the end. Then we got the hint that this was the end. We are hoping that CBS brings this series back with the entire cast. PLEASE CBS, bring it back!! This was one of our top shows. The end of it is more the reason to just pick up a great book and forget about the TV!
I absolutely was caught unaware about this being Medium’s last episode. I was in a state of shock to finally realize at the end of the show that it was really the END of the SHOW!This was by far one of the best shows on television. I have been an avid fan for the entire time, and have even met the real Allison DuBois at one of her seminars. I am NOT happy with the way the series ended, as it was a real downer! The family unit was such an integral part of the show, and to have it… Read more »
VERY FEW GOOD TV SERIES ON THESE DAYS. WHAT A SHAME MEDIUM HAS BEEN CANCELLED. SO SAD HOW THE SHOW ENDED. MAYBE THE WRITERS CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO START A NEW SHOW WITH THE GIRLS BEING THE GROWN ADULTS WITH FAMILIES AND THEIR DEAD PARENTS CAN SOME HOW COME BACK AND TOUCH THEIR LIVES IN A HELPFUL WAY. PLEASE COME UP WITH A NEW STORY LINE TO BRING BACK A GREAT SHOW CALLED THE MEDIUM. WE ARE GOING TO MISS ALL OF YOU.
I loved the show, why it has been cancelled I have no idea, probably because it was a great show, I loved all of the cast members. Everyone all seemed just right for the show. So sorry it is gone
I also was very surprised and shocked. I kept waiting for Alison to wake up from a dream. I had no idea the series was ending. I would have liked to have been warned. I love this show and look forward to seeing it every week. I’m really going to miss it. I think they should bring it back, but not with Joe dead.
I was a devoted fan/watcher! I loved the chemistry between Joe and Allison! Joe alwyas talked Allison down from the ledge and put his senible perspective into many of her episodes. The girls grew up before my eyes! The series finale made me cry but in the end Joe and Allison were together again!
What a cruddy way to end the series…
Firstly, not letting people know it was the finale. Finales usually get big press. Why no press, people?
Secondly, killing Joe? Why go that way? Just lazy writing.
I’m with Howie. This episode never happened. Just stupid.
I hated the ending and want a do-over. We NEED another season!
Loved medium! So much for Friday night T.V. Way to go again CSB.
what an ending, along with the surprise that it was the finale episode which seemingly was a hush, hush secret that we the viewers did not know was coming. I called my sister after the show and said “what was that?????” we went over the whole show to try and figure out what part was a dream and what part was not a dream. When Allison waved goodbye tears came to my eyes and then realised that hey, this is the final show. The Medium was the only series that I faithfully watched every week, I also watch the reruns,… Read more »
When I read the synopsis on the on screen guide I was like, what, since when. I never heard prior that it would be cancelled. I don’t like the decision unless it was made by the actors, such as they did not want to continue with the series due to it ran its course!
Wow had no idea this was final episode until it was over. still not sure the about ending did Joe die ? if i read it right the caption at end of show right it says he didn’t really die and they were married for 40 some odd years????? still scratching my head over this ending. this was a really great show and i’ll truly miss it. not sure why it was cancelled the writers always had interesting story’s and kept it fresh, tuff to do over time.
I was very disappointed how the last show ended. Allison should have been surrounded by her loved ones when she died. Not in some cold, heartless nursing home.
She deserved more respect than that. I will truly miss this show and its characters.
Didn’t like the ending – had no idea this was the last show.
Loved the series but this was a sad way for it to end.
