Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Perfect ending.
Great series!
UGH……Hated it…. It has bothered me all day long….you just keept waiting for her to wake up…then when you found out she was …UGH….. it was just so disturbing….
I hated it…I don’t think I can say that enough !!!!! way to sad !!!!!!!!!!!!!
It truly bothered me all day long !!!
I haven’t adequate words to express how sad this series ending makes me! I watch a great deal of TV — certainly more than most consider healthy — and I can say with certainty that Medium was my absolute favorite! I am so saddened by its cancellation. Please consider resurrecting it. Regarding the finale, I was stunned to realize that it actually was the finale! There was no warning that “this was it.” Was it necessary to kill Joe to prove that Alison had the makings of a strong, survivalist woman? I certainly don’t agree. And why did Joe, after… Read more »
I just can’t believe its over. I’m so sad!!! I think CBS is crazy for letting this show go. I have been a fan for several years and looked forward to it every week. I think the last show was very disappointing. I just kept waiting for her to wake up and it all be a dream… and I’m still waiting!
I have been with Joe and Allison since the beginning. Surprise is not the word for what I felt at the end of the show. I kept telling my son “Joe can’t die”. I am so glad to find it will still be on on Friday night. And to have it sandwiched between 2 of my other favorite shows it just more than I would have ever asked for. Thank you, Joe and Allison, for all the wonderful hours you have given us. We look forward to many, many more.
Medium was a great show and I’m sorry to see it come to an (unexpected) end. The final episode was terrible! I was extremely unhappy with the way they decided to end the series. Honestly, why end it by pointlessy killing off Joe? Although great writing characterized this series, the last episode was very disjointed and somewhat incoherent. Like another reviewer, I have decided that it was just a bad dream.
This show has been one of my favorites and I have watched it for all seven seasons. Knowing it was the finale I almost didn’t watch it because I was afraid the producers of the show would not be sensitive to the loyal fans who were emotionally involved with the characters and storyline. In many ways I was right. I’m sorry they chose to kill off Joe. This in my opinion was a mistake. I did like that at the conclusion the actors all said goodbye to the viewers. It was a quality show and I’m sad it is over.… Read more »
First I had no idea it was the end! I record every show I enjoy them so much. Now i have a huge void in my life! What a cruel ending to us! what brain decided to let us down so harshly,(KILL JOE)! I think they are great actors, and werent given a good time slot, or even a steady to be on. The show had Joe almost die before. I would like to know who didn’t won’t the show on? I am upset I believe, well ys I am my fovorite show is gone and I have been crying my eyes… Read more »
I’m truly starting to think with was Ms. Arquette who wanted out.
i loved the series finale, it brought tears to my eyes when joe came back for her and she asked for a kiss. what a incredible kiss!, and i liked all the goodbyes from each character. im gonna miss that show
Medium was the best .I wish they would bring it back . It was a dynamic series one of the best.I cried with the finale very moving , the ending was right on the money
I thought this was the WORST finale for a show I’ve ever seen. It completely contradicted itself in the show mythology. If Alison (and all three girls, supposedly) are such hot-shot mediums, why couldn’t Joe stick around for awhile and help them through their grief? After all, both his father and mother hung out with Alison for YEARS. Plus…Alison is not the only member of the cast. A series finale should give all the characters a chance to say goodbye, not just one. I wanted to see Lee, Joe and the girls in the episode, not just Alison. I feel… Read more »
You can please some of the people most of the time, and most of the people some of the time, but apparently they can’t please you!
Very great show , Great series !!! Will miss it forever !!!
I just can’t believe this show is done. One of the best shows ever. I loved how the family was so real. This family was so real in their everyday lives (besides the seeing the dead) I could relate to them. I introduced the show to my boyfriend and daughter and they also fell in love with it. I am so diappointed. Will really miss it. I as others did not know that this was the Last Show until the end when the cast is saying goodbye. I cried, not just over the story line, but that this is the… Read more »
Sister, boy howdy, you hit a home run with your comments!
Shame on you CBS!! This was one of the few shows that I watched on your sorry net work. Had no idea that Medium was even being cancelled and thought this was one of the worst shows. Hopefully NBC will pickup on it’s popularity and start a remake with the same cast.
I loved this show. I enjoyed the performances and the mysteries each case had Allison solve. I especially appreciated the real family dynamic showed. I was struck that the last 7 years were about Allison’s life with Joe, and the show ended with their relationship’s end. It took creative license as the real life Allison and her husband are alive and well etc,.., but I knew the series would not be exactly autobiographical. I thank all involved for a terrific show. In my opinion CBS has a big whole in its programming for Friday, and won’t capture the rating it… Read more »
