In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

we love this show and are going to be terribly disappointed if it gets cancelled!
loveeeeeeeeeeee
Please don’t cancel Mercy!! I think the problem with this show & Trauma was when it was on. Dancing with the stars was really hard to compete with..why not try changing the time to later & see if that will help & also like with Trauma, I think alot of people, as with me, have to DVR the show to watch @ another time.
mercy is the best show please dont cancel it im hanging out for season 2
I hope that Mercy isn’t cancelled…I enjoy the show greatly and since the first episode I’ve been drawn into it. I’ve become addicted!!!!! And its sad to think that the one show that im actually into (sadly I have Mercy withdrawls..no lie..) could be cancelled… I look forward to each episode, it is a weekly ritual for my best friend and I to watch it..(we are both going to nursing school). I feel that people aren’t watching the show because of todays busy lifestyle. I personally have to wait till late to watch it ( on demand or online) because… Read more »
don’t cancel mercy! i enjoyed watching it!! ALOT!!
I can hardly believe they would take such a great show off the air. Not only is it entertaining, but it keeps you coming back week after week to see what will happen. I personally am sick of all the reality shows on TV. Bring back the comedies and dramas of years past. I know the TV executives go by ratings, but look what other shows you are placing the new shows up against. “Trauma” ran in the same time slot as “House” and “Mercy” ran in that same time slot as “American Idol”. Use your brains and spread the… Read more »
Mercy AND Trauma are two shows that are real, action paced, true to life medical dramas. I am SHOCKED and SADDENED to hear they have been cancelled!!! Someone needs their head examined. There’s no profanity, no raw sex, mo lewd behavior, just great entertainment. Now that we have been introduced to the lives of these characters and the many qualities they possess, we are FORCED to be hanging, wondering where the characters will be. Not oly did I watch them BUT I taped them in case I was distracted or disturbed while watching so I didn’t miss anything. I wish… Read more »
I LOVE MERCY!!!!! Its the new ER and it deserves to go on!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH don’t cancel Mercy!! I love this show! People just haven’t discovered it, but it’s my favorite show on tv right now! Get rid of all the shi**y reality tv and more Mercy!
Can’t understand how lame people are to keep watching stupid reality shows and not watch a great show like Mercy! Sure hope it survives.
Please! Please! Please! don’t cancel Mercy I think it’s one of the best new shows out there. I really like the Irish family. The episode with the intervention was very funny.
Mercy is probably one of the best shows on TV right now. It’s insane that every time they have a good show on they cancel it!!!! And I agree Jeanne I HATE the stupid reality shows!!!!
Not all of us are into reality shows! They are lame with stupid people. Give me shows like MERCY please! it’s well written with great characters. Trauma is good too! I’ve watched Miami Medical once and found it so poorly written with characters that are too boring to enjoy. Why would a network cancel a quality show like MERCY? the executives must not be “Smarter than a 5th grader”. but this is the network that dumped Conan for the idiot with the white/black hair. KEEP MERCY!
I enjoy mercy.. so much. the realness of the conflict in Afghanistan and what the characters are dealing with maybe too much for viewers. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the show and what it is that is displaying. The love stroy though convulted it is inticing and a reason i look forward to seeing it every week.
Please do not cancel this show.
