In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

I love Mercy. But I don’t have a TV so I have to watch it on http://www.hulu.com. I’m just wondering if the network is counting all the people that go back and watch the shows online because they didn’t have a TV working or had to work or something else that prevented them from watching it when it came on TV. I really hope they don’t cancel the show.
I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY CANCELLED MERCY. I REALLY LIKED THE SHOW AND THE FINALE LEFT US WONDERING. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MERCY BACK ON IN 2010-2011.
NBC stands for the New ******* and Corporation
Please do not cancel this show!! My mother, my two daughters and I never miss an episode!! I agree that it did start out slow and there are alot of medical shows on TV right now, BUT it has really gotten great!! It would be a mistake to cancel this show… I am saddened to hear that they are even thinking about it… I really am dying to know what happened after the season 1 finale….. I too am one of those people who record it and watch later. One reason is I hate commercials and when you record it… Read more »
So it’s come to this. What a sad state of affairs when an excellent show gets cancelled in favor of a moronic reality shows.
The dumbing down of the airwaves continues full speed ahead. It’s to bad the viewing public with a brain loses out to the morons who believe reality shows are real and not scripted.
I LOVE mercy! I always missed it during the week for my night class but as soon as it was posted on hulu or nbc.com i would watch it! I never missed a episode it is one of the only shows i watched religiously. The season finale was such a cliffhanger i am dying to find out what happens next!
This is the best show on TV. Please don’t cnacel.
The only reason people aren’t tunning in is because they’re busy life’s just like anyone else so they WATCH IT ON DVR or WATCH IT ONLINE put i grantee that if their’s a secound Season and you give the show a chance the rating’s should go up 95% of people agree with this out of 100 which is stupid to CANCEL this show. I loved that show!!!!! IM devastated that they cancelled. Its the only great show on for WED nites.
Nooo!!! I LOVE SOO MUCH MERCY HOSPITAL IT’S MY FAVORITE SERIE . THE MERCY AUDIENCES’S IS SO SMALL BUT THERE IS A LOT OF PERSONS WHICH WATCH THIS SERIE!!!! DONT CANCELLED MERCY PLEASE!!!! THANKS
I don’t want Mercy to get cancelled, it’s one of the only shows I watch. Do they take into consideration that people watch it ondemand? I work nights and watch it the following day, maybe more people do that?
Why does the stupid reality shows beat out the entertainment series. Those reality shows are for morons that don’t know any better. Probably the same ones that beat their children or molest them. Only an idiot would watch those things. “Mercy” has just about everything a reality show has but better put to the people. I don’t say that the Producers and writers couldn’t do better than what they have, but they sure as hell beat reality shows where morons get on to show the world just how stupid they are and how stupid the people are that watch them.
Why do these stupid corporations cancel anything that doesn’t reach a billion viewers? They did the same thing with Friday Night Lights.
I love Mercy and look forward to watching it. Why do they always cancel the good shows. Everyone does not want to watch reality…..
