Earlier this year, ABC introduced a thriller series called The River. It wasn’t a ratings success and will surely be cancelled later this month. Now, the network is trying an action show called Missing. Will this one fare any differently?
Missing follows Becca Winstone (Ashley Judd), a former CIA operative who’s made a new life for her herself as a single mother and a florist. She agrees to let her son Michael (Nick Eversman) study abroad but, a few weeks into his trip, he disappears and she suspects foul play. Becca arrives in Rome and begins piecing together the clues and it isn’t long before the kidnappers realize they’ve picked a fight with the wrong woman. The cast also includes Cliff Curtis, Tereza Voriskova, Adriano Giannini, and Sean Bean.
The series debuted on March 15th and attracted a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.6 million total viewers. That wasn’t a bad performance considering that Missing was airing opposite American Idol and the hyped return on NBC’s Community. CBS was airing a low-rated NCAA Basketball game instead of their usual sitcoms.
In week two, Missing dropped a whopping 24% in the demo and dropped to fourth place in the timeslot (beaten by Idol, Community, and more basketball) with a 1.6 rating and 8.81 million. In week three, the demo dropped another 6% and the show remained in fourth place.
Over the course of this season, Missing’s ratings have slowly dwindled further downward. In fact, the show’s demo numbers have never risen.

Last night’s installment of Missing dropped another 14%, to a new series low, with a 1.2 in the demo and 6.32 million total viewers. It’s demo rating was tied for fourth place in the timeslot — with The CW’s Vampire Diaries.
When a series on a major network ties (or is beaten) by something airing on The CW, you know there’s a major problem.
Missing is currently ranked 21st out of 22 scripted ABC shows this season. It currently has a “D” grade on our ABC Ratings Report Card and is only outperforming Charlie’s Angels average — that was the remake that occupied the same timeslot and was cancelled last November.
Though ABC hasn’t said as much, there’s no chance that Missing will be renewed for a second season. The ratings are just too low — and they keep going lower.
On the positive side, there are only two episodes left in the season so it seems very likely that the network will let them both air before cancelling the show.
But, what do you think? Are you enjoying Missing? Is it worth renewing or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?

I VOTE TO KEEP MISSING ON THE AIR. ALL OF MY FRIENDS LIKE THE SHOW. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL IT.
I totally love “Missing”, it will be very disappointing if it is not back on for a 2nd season!!!!! Big Mistake!!!

For sure –keep it!! The show gets better & more suspenseful every week. Love it!
How about everyone boycott ABC over this one? Just don’t the station watch it for a week! This was the best show that ABC had. ASHLEY JUDD WORKED HER ASS OFF! YOU COULD TELL SHE GAVE IT HER ALL!!!!!! “MISSING” is the best action show on TV .Since 24 is no longer on TV it is the best show period. It just needs to be moved to 10:00 pm time on SATURDAYS.
Missing is the best ACTION SHOW that is now on TV .ASHLEY JUDD does a super job of acting in the series .In my opinion it needs to be moved to Saturdays at 10:00PM.please do not cancle it.
This was a great action drama show- just getting into the story. It will be very sad to see it go. ABC should keep it going until Becca’s son gets rescued at least. Have watched it from the beginning. Please keep it going until then.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THE BEST SHOW ON TV @ 8pm ON THURSDAY NIGHT. ME AND MY FAMILY CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS SHOW TO COME ON! IT’S ALSO BRINGS ATTENTION TO SEX TRAFFICING WHICH IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WORLD WIDE! DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW AND ASHLEY JUDD IS GREAT IN HER ROLE.
I tried to watch Missing. I wanted to like it, but it made my eyes roll one too many times. Judd’s character seems to win every fight against the real bad guys, but when she is subdued it turns out to be someone who doesn’t really want to hurt her. Miraculous escape! She’s always barely a minute late to find her son, but can see enough to know where to go next. Her son fights off a bad guy and throws him off a moving train, but at exactly that moment the train is stopped (and manages to come to… Read more »
you don’t know what you’re talking about it’s an amazing show!
Ratings are crap! I second the other post that suggested a move to another time slot. This show may not have attracted a huge following initially, I mean, how long can we keep looking for this kid, right? But the acting and character development has been fantastic and those of us who gave it a shot can’t wait to see what will happen in each subsequent episode. I haven’t missed a show (DVR’d if I thought I would). Give ’em a second chance.
from what I remember when Ashley was promoting the show it was originally intended to be a 10 or 12 episode show that was pre filmed in Europe and at the end of the 12 episodes the show was over, ABC did this before with a show called Day Break, they cancelled it mid way and basically had a revolt and ended up showing the final 4 or so episodes online. I don’t think this show was ever meant to come back.
Missing is the best show on TV. It is full of suspense, drama and each episode is better than the next. I really look forward to seeing it each week. I’m so sick and tired of the networks canceling shows too early. If ABC cancels this show I will never watch a show on that network again. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL MISSING!!!!
I am disappointed that this action-packed show will not be returning for another season. The acting is terrific, the locations are beautiful and the plot thickens with each new episode. Its a shame that more people have not tuned in to this great show!! Maybe it could move to another time slot.
I LOVE Missing and am sad that it will not be renewed. I think it’s one of the best shows on TV right now, but if they’re filming it in the actual locations, it must be really expensive!
I love this show and am so disappointed it’s not returning for another season. The cast is outstanding and it really keeps me interested. What a shame it has to compete with American Idol. Maybe recast the major characters into another exciting show at a different time!!!
I LOVE THIS SHOW .SHE IS A WODERFUL ACTRESS. IT IS AN EXCITING SHOW. SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO EVERY THURSDAY. PLEASE BRING IT BACK. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANY OTHER DANCING OR SINGING SHOWS. BRING ASHLEY BACK. LISTEN TO US. CHANGE THE TIME BUT DO NOT GET RID OF IT.
