Back in May 2008, after Moonlight had been cancelled by CBS, there was some talk of the vampire series moving over to the CW network. The Media Rights Capital (MRC) company had purchased CW’s Sunday night timeslots, to fill with their own content.
Unfortunately, MRC was committed to using their own shows (a move that certainly didn’t work out very well) and Alex O’Loughlin, Sophia Myles, and Jason Dohring had to start looking for other work. Considering that there are still thousands and thousands of loyal Moonlight fans, you have to think that somebody is regretting the decision.
Well, it took almost two years but Moonlight is finally coming to the CW network. Unfortunately, no new episodes are being produced. The CW will pair the 16 existing episodes with reruns of The Vampire Diaries beginning Thursday, June 3rd.
Here’s the official press release.
“MOONLIGHT” TO SHINE ON THE CW
Acclaimed Vampire Series starring Alex O’Loughlin Joins “The Vampire Diaries” On Thursday Nights Beginning June 3May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living. One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.
Produced By: Silver Pictures Television in association with Warner Bros. Television
Executive Producers: Joel Silver, Chip Johannessen, Ron Koslow, Rod Holcomb and Gerard Bocaccio
Co-Executive Producer: Trevor Munson
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that CW or any other network has any plans or interest in resurrecting Moonlight. O’Loughlin is expected to be busy with the new Hawaii Five-0 this fall on CBS (which co-owns the CW network).
What do you think? Will you be tuning in to watch the Moonlight reruns?
I too never saw Moonlight when it was on CBS. CBS never properly advertised it. I caught it on the SyFy network. It is a great show. I agree with the above poster “a vampire in love”. Mick thought he was a monster. Beth found her guardian angel. This show was fresh, new and original. CBS messed up big time and they will never admit it. I am glad the CW along with SyFy and Chiller are smart enough to air it. Moonlight won a People’s Choice Award and a Saturn Award. Hopefully WB will see how many people still… Read more »
I’ve been a fan of Moonlight since the very beginning when I saw the promo “Taking Chances” (the song by Celine Dion) in 2007. I knew right away I was going to like this show. And I was there when we rode the emotional roller coaster of the writer’s strike and the cancellation. But I’ve been involved in pushing for a movie with the popularity of the vamp craze because of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. I don’t feel Moonlight will be back as a series. Mainly because the lead characters Alex and Sophia both have TV series. A movie… Read more »
I was captivated with Moonlight prior to the whole Vampire pandemonium because of Twilight, True Blood, and Vampire Diaries. But now that I am Vampire fanatic, I love how it really captivated one of the greatest Vampire movie ever, The Lost Boys. The eyes, fangs, but with the softer side; just like Michael. All in all, it was truly a mistake that CBS cancelled the Moonlight, because they were embarking on Million dollar market now with new Vampires, The Cullens and The Salvatores. Overall, I really love the chemistry that Alex and Sophia had, they were epic. I truly hope… Read more »
i had never even heard of the show before i saw it filter in my netflix movies to see list. So far I’ve only seen the first 4 episodes and im already addicted. My boyfriend and i sat for 3 straight hours watching them. we love the show. make some new episodes so i can continue watching!
I watched the rerun and was SO HAPPY. I miss this show…can’t help it. I know Alex O’laughlin is on H-5O this fall, but I cannot help but dream they bring this show back.
Yay,I am so happy. I love this show and I missesd the last few episodes so now I will get to see them. And since I am already going through Vampire Diaries withdrawls, this will help ease that void. Hopefully enough people will watch and the CW will crank out some new episodes.
THIS WAS SUCH FALSE FALSE HOPE!! I GOT so so excited to see Moonlight coming back on the air on June 3rd to only find out THEY ARE REPEATS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Soo…you wait 2 years after this fantastic show just ends mid stride and all you give us is RE-RUNS…no no Im not gonna watch it I already have it on dvd I WANT new episodes!! Such freaking false hope this CW website was!
Of course I will tune in to watch Moonlight. I hope it will be so popular that maybe the stars can be brought back eventually to continue the series. That would be fantastic!
so true
I am just hoping that the show starts back up. I know that other cast members have other shows on but he can be replaced on that show. He needs to come back and keep going with Moonlight.
I loved Moonlight wish they had some new shows to air but am glad it’s on the CW…
Would be even better if there were to be new episodes!
Oh wow, of course I’ll be tuning in! I only caught 4 of the series’ original episodes. I can’t wait to see all the episodes. Since the episodes are being paired with “The Vampire Diaries” I’m planning on checking that series out too.
this was the best show ever my family never miss one single episode and we were all sad when they had the finale how come a good tv series stop when they all have other ugly one to terminate. it was such a disaster to finally fell in love with one movie tv series and the next thing you know it wont have a second season. dont you guys realize that this was one of the best thrilling, drama movie ever made so we are all hoping that they will change their mind and make a second third etc.. season… Read more »

I was intrigued from the very start with the premise of MOONLIGHT. Finally something different, A vampire in love? I couldn’t wait to see it. The 1st episodes were raw yet interesting enough to keep bringing me back. It was after the 4th episode that I was totally hooked, and by the time the strike came I was begging for more. I was thrilled with the last 4 episodes and even loved the ending. The characters becoming more complicated and lovable. This show kept getting better , the writing and stories more interesting. Then BAM! it was done. CBS wouldn’t… Read more »
I totally agree. We want this show back.
I agree, too. I’m really thinking about buying the DVD, and that’s saying a lot, considering I never buy TV series because I can almost always find them to watch on the Internet.
