After being on the bubble for several seasons, CBS has finally cancelled The New Adventures of Old Christine. There’s a chance that it may be saved by another network but odds would have been better if this had happened in previous years.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows the challenges of Christine Campbell (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) , a neurotic single mom who has a hard time finding a relationship and juggling her responsibilities at home and work. Others in her life include her low-key brother, Matthew (Hamish Linklater); best friend and business partner, Barbara (Wanda Sykes); young son Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon); irresponsible ex-husband, Richard (Clark Gregg); and his current love, “New Christine” (Emily Rutherfurd). Often popping up to make “Old Christine” feel even more incompetent are “mean mommies,” Marly and Lindsay (Tricia O’Kelley and Alex Kapp Horner).
After being part of CBS’ Monday night line-up for two seasons, Old Christine was used to help establish a second comedy block for the network on Wednesday nights. Unfortunately, the experiment wasn’t a big success. Old Christine was barely renewed last season. As there had been in the past, there was talk that ABC might pick it up if CBS had actually cancelled the show.
This season, Old Christine’s numbers have gotten worse and CBS decided to abandon the Wednesday night comedy hour. As a result, the network decided to finally cancel Old Christine.
In past years, Old Christine was attractive to ABC because they weren’t having much success with their own sitcoms. This time around, they already have a well-established night of sitcoms and several new options waiting in the wings.
Still, there is some talk of ABC picking up the series. As of today, the execs at ABC and Warner Bros. are trying to work out the numbers. The deal that Warner Bros. can offer is likely being impacted by how much profit new episodes will bring in syndication.
Last summer, Warner Bros. sold the Old Christine syndication package to Lifetime for some ad time and about $350,000 per episode (compared to 30 Rock episodes which went for $800,000). The sitcom was also sold to local stations in most of the US markets.
Reruns will pop up on cable and local stations in the fall. It remains to be seen if new episodes will be on ABC.
What do you think? Should ABC rescue The New Adventures of Old Christine? Where would you put it — with The Middle, Cougar Town, or someplace else?

I find this show that made me laugh out loud, something that hasn’t happened in years! I’ve seen every episode now, and was looking forward to the new ones this spring. Please bring this show back!
Absolutely love the new adventures of old christine! I’d personally replace the middle.
Please bring it back, I discovered the show by re-runs. I ‘ve been wondering when were the new episodes going to air. Now come to find out it had been cancelled, I think it is a big mistake. In my opinion this show has lots of potential.
I loved the show. The characters were hilarious and they were a great “fit”! I WISH they would bring it back. ABC could put it on a different night than COUGARTOWN and Modern Family. I watch both of those shows too!
This is a GREAT show it just needs the right time slot Please give it a chance and have it follow an established hit
Please bring this back. Get rid of any reality show and replace it with this! I think a Tuesday night would be great. There are no funnies on Tuesday night. I love the middle and not too hot over Cougar Town. Don’t even watch it so replace it with Christine. Christine was one of my favorite sitcoms. All the actors were great and it was a fabulous fit.
Great show – crisp writing, great cast with great timing. Not the same old cookie cutter sitcom. Too bad. Just like “Better Off Ted,” it was probably too smart for the populace (e.g., “Two And A Half Men” as America’s favorite show – really?!)
Bring back the show!! There arent that many good shows left on TV. She was HILARIOUS, I can’t believe they cancled it! I enjoy it soo much!! Please, please, please, please bring back The New Adventures of Old Christine!!!
i just started watching on lifetime and i love it. last night’s episode “the finale” just left me hanging. i want more. i regret not watching when it was on.
I love this show. The cast is great, the writing is wonderfu. I can’t beleive it wasn’t picked up. Please, ABC pick this up. You wont be sorry.
I didn’t know it was canceled until I realized I was still waiting for new episodes in December. I think if ABC doesn’t get it we should write to Lifetime to make new episodes. I can’t believe we don’t get to see Christine taking classes in college. I was so looking forward to that, oh well. I hope that some network picks this show up.
Please pick this show up ABC – you have some great ones, and this one would just do more to establish you as a great comedy sitcom network. LOVE this show – it is a riot!
