As expected, CBS has pulled the plug on their long-running drama, Numb3rs. A mainstay of the Friday night schedule, brothers Charlie and Don Eppes won’t be back next fall with a seventh season.
Numb3rs revolves around an FBI agent (Rob Morrow) and his genius brother (David Krumholtz) who helps solve cases with mathematics. The cast also features Judd Hirsch (as their father), Alimi Ballard, Dylan Bruno, Navi Rawat, Aya Sumika, and Peter MacNicol.
The cancellation doesn’t come as much of a surprise, especially when you look at the figures.
The ratings have dropped quite a bit in recent years. Last season fell to an average of a 2.2 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.2 million total viewers. This season, the ratings dropped further still, to a 1.8 rating and 8.26 million viewers. CBS cut the show’s episode order from 22 to 16 installments last fall. While the official word was that CBS had an overflow of original programming, networks don’t usually cut the orders of successful shows.

The cast and crew filmed what could serve as a series finale and Morrow and Krumholtz signed on for new TV show pilots. While the actors would be contractually obligated to return to Numb3rs if CBS decided to renew it, ABC and FOX were confident that they wouldn’t.
Last week, it was confirmed that the show’s sets were being dismantled, another sign that Numb3rs was finished. CBS has now made the cancellation official.
On the positive side, Morrow will return next fall in a new series for ABC called The Whole Truth. He’ll play an attorney opposite Joely Richardson. Unfortunately, Krumholtz’s comedy pilot, Tax Man, was not picked up by FOX for the 2010-11 season.
What do you think? Are you satisfied with the way that Numb3rs ended? What will you miss about the show? Will you give The Whole Truth a try?

So sorry it’s cancelled. My whole family made it a point to watch it. We usually viewed it via the DVR so we never missed a show!!!! Why get rid of shows that work and put on new ones that have no appeal. 🙁
I cannot believe that they canceled Numb3rs and didn’t even give us a series finale. Like others have said now we are going to be stuck watching lame reality shows. This just flat out is bad business. They always end up canceling the good shows. Me and my husband always loved watching it together. The one show I watch that he got into as well. UGH!! CBS makes me so mad. Maybe they will see all these comments, and ones from other sites and consider bringing it back.
I agree with all the others about how Numb3rs should not have been cancelled. The show was both cerebral and action oriented. The use of mathematics to solve crimes let everyone see (especially young people) how mathematical equations could be used to solve real-world crime problems. Like others, I looked for this intriguing show to be there every Friday evening. Now we are left to watch another boring reality show where each person tries to do in his or her “buddy.” No family values there. Perhaps one of the smaller TV channels will pick up the series–similar to the 13… Read more »
We watch a lot of CBS but we never watch the reality shows. we find those disrespectful and full of imoral choises. they are depressing to us. this show was truley well written and acted. we enjoyed the twists and turns and finally the great endings. the guest stars were also great. (lou diamond phillips) its a pity that CBS did not at the very least give this wonderful show a great series finalie. but the person that is in charge of the money is usually out of touch with good taste. they only care about the money. (example the… Read more »
I loved this show. It made me realize how much I miss Math. PLEASE bring it back!!!!!!! I thought they would start having mysteries in Europe where Amita & Professor Epps went on their honeymoon and call their brother for help. I loved the characters. I didn’t know it was even on the chopping block or I would have emailed the CBS.
NOOOO! Why did they cancel Numbers?? My family and friends loved that show! We were expecting them to do shows in England and have his brother go over there to help once in a while and they could even help England with troubles. They need to bring the show back! Why didn’t they tell anyone? I bet they were afraid of what people say and that they would be up in arms. That was a great cast and show! Bring it back!!!!!!
This show should not have been cancelled. It had unique characters that were well acted and acters perfect for each character. The show wonderfully showed family dynamics. How we could have our differences and yet still work together to help each other out. Next to that the storys were wonderful and keep you wanting more.
Numb3rs was the only show my wife and I would bother to make time for during the week. The characters were unique and entertaining, and the plots were fast-moving and cerebral (perhaps it wasn’t dumb or violent enough to make sufficient ratings).
I guess we’ll have to buy the remainder of the DVD sets.
Very disappointed in CBS, but no big surprise given how lame network TV has become.
I think it stinks that numb3rs had to be cancelled. This is really a family oriented show .
This show deals with traditional family helping out each other, family spats where Charlie and Don had little disaggreements but always managed to get back together in the end. Even at the end of every show, the Eps family and the rest of the detectives still get togrther at the end to even portray an extended family. ITS A MISTAKE TO CANCELL THIS SHOW
I HATE that Numb3rs was cancelled. Our very large family thoroughly enjoyed every episode. BRING IT BACK!! PLEASE!
Drop all the hospital shows and reality shows. Numb3rs was creative until they tried to add romance.
I really enjoyed Numb3rs, I enjoyed the story lines and interpersonal relationships within the family and friends. I found its use of math extremely interesting. It seems when I like a show it ends. I wish is would come back.
I´m really desappointed!
I can´t belive that Numb3rs will be cancell.
It´s the only serie I was following. What a pitty!
A big mistake.
We will miss this smart and interesting TV show.
Hell No it shouldn’t be cancelled!! Creative idea, great family dynamics
what are they gonna replace it with,,,another stupid reality show??!!
Numbers should not have been cancelled. Our whole family always watched it. I can
think of a few other shows they could have cancelled. I will miss this show on Friday
night.
