Despite a slew of negative reviews from critics last year, ABC’s midseason drama, October Road, attracted an average of 10.2 million viewers for its six episode season. The series typically lost a large percentage of viewers from its Grey’s Anatomy lead-in but it was enough to earn Road a second year. Now that the second season has finished airing, will there be a year three?
For whatever reason, October Road hit a slump in its sophomore year. Prior to this month, the series had been averaging fewer than five million viewers. ABC had ordered 13 episodes for year two with the option of expanding it to 22 episodes if needed. With the writers strike and the disappointing ratings, the network didn’t feel they needed any more.
Last month, ABC announced that several of its series had been renewed for the fall season and, not surprisingly, October Road was absent from the list. If network executives were waiting until March to see the performance of the final three episodes, the show’s cause wasn’t helped. March 3rd’s episode attracted only 5.3 million viewers and a 2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. This week’s two hours averaged a dismal 4.7 million viewers and a 1.8/5 rating/share. Compared to last season’s finale, that’s a loss of almost 50% in total viewers.
Since it looks pretty unlikely that Nick and the other residents of Knights Ridge will be back for a third season on ABC, will we ever learn the identity of Sam’s father? Maybe.
There is talk that the CW and Lifetime are interested in continuing the series should ABC let it go. CW could certainly use the ratings as none of their present programming comes close to attracting Road’s viewership. On the other hand, Road would fit well with Lifetime’s other programming.
We’ll know ABC’s decision by mid-May at the latest. If they don’t want to continue the drama, it will be interesting to see if some other network does. Stay tuned!
Please keep October Road. I dont watch that much tv but i really got into watching October Road.
PLEASE KEEP IT!!!!!!
Keep October Road ! Its one of the only shows that I looked foward to.
I ‘m sorry to hear that ABC is going to take October Road off the air. ABC take too many good shows off and a lot of people are starting to notice that. The shows that need to go they are still on. ABC please don’t take October Road off I’m hook.
I had everyone I knew watching October Road and I am disappointed that it will be gone. I do not know how the stations get their viewer information, but I do not have a friend or family member that did not watch it. This is a huge mistake for ABC.
This was a nice little show to watch. It was a breath of fresh air to watch something other than reality tv and crime shows.
Don’t cancel October Road. I love that show. It somehow reminds me of my youth.
Please someone out there pick up October Road. That show is the best. I need to know what happens. October Road Rocks!!!!
I can not believe that this is the second time ABC has cancelled October Road! By changing the time slot the second season and then the writer’s strike October Road was never given a chance to blossom into the show that it could of been. Instead of having all these nonsense reality shows on the air go back to sensible television with shows that have good storylines and that are family oriented. ABC give October Road another chance and if it doesn’t work out then we will have to live by the old clice’, THREE STRIKES AND YOUR OUT!
ABC is crazy to cancel Octber Road it was the best show next to greys anatomy I hope someone picks it up or at least they finish what they start. If they don’t want to continue the show they at least need to give us viewers closure instead of leaving us hanging.
please somebody pick up this awesome show, ANYBODY!
Please dont take my October Road away for me! PLEASE!!! I love that show and im just dying to see what happens next.
I am really upset with ABC for taking off two of their best shows ever. Especially October Road. So many of us watch it. And Men in Trees, Also a wonderful show. Reality and violence is really not the way to go. Soooo Disappointed, as are all my friends.
I cannot believe ABC is cancelling October Road. It is the best show on tv and I hope that the CW or Lifetime takes the opportunity to pick up this show, because I can’t live without October Road!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!.
THEY CANNOT LET OCTOBER ROAD DIE WITHOUT ENDING IT!
iT CANT ITS MY LIFE..THEY CANNOT KILL ME 🙂
HHAAA…SERIOUSLY THO.
I AM GETTING SO MANY OF MY FRIENDS HOOKED ON IT!
Someone said it before me but ABC has lost me as a viewer with its cancellation of October Road, Men in Trees and Womens Murder Club. I am sick to death of realty shows & bad talent shows!
