ABC’s mid-season medical drama, Off the Map, recently concluded its first season on the air. The alphabet network’s been looking for a new hit drama and this one was produced by veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. How does Off the Map stack up? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two?
Off the Map revolves around six doctors who have “lost their way” and travel to a remote South American jungle to help those in need and to try to rediscover the reasons why they wanted to become physicians. The series features the talents of Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The medical drama premiered with a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The TV series won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. ABC decided to give Off the Map another chance to attract viewers by rerunning the first episode the following night, in place of a Private Practice rerun, and it retained much of the Grey’s Anatomy lead-in audience.
Unfortunately, that’s still not a great start and subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Off the Map is the second-lowest scripted series on ABC that hasn’t already been officially cancelled, averaging a 1.7 in the demo and 4.96 million viewers. It ranks below doomed No Ordinary Family and just above doomed Detroit 1-8-7. In short, unless ABC really needs to keep Shonda Rhimes happy, there is no reason why the network would bring Off the Map back next year for season two.

PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW. My daughter, an acupuncturist who has done Doctors without Borders, and I adore this show. It is very real and is action-packed. We can’t believe how much takes place in every episode. The realism and the underlying romances are great !!!
I love greys anatomy private practice and now off the map those are the only 3 tv shows i watch religously please dont cancel the 2nd season!!!!!
I LOVE this show… I so hope it’s on again next season!!! I like it more than Greys or PP,,, and I’m very loyal to those shows… Please don’t cancel it……….

Don’t just give up – write better story lines! There is so much potential, you’ve barely scratched the surface. Martin Henderson is amazing (and very easy on the eyes) so to cut him short, would be a shame. You could easily add more realism to the story lines, make use of the jungle’s natural flora and fauna, more McGyver-like solutions, etc. Some of the characters need to be a little tougher, as well – they’re living in the jungle! This is the first series since Gilmore Girls that I have watched over and and over again. I seriously LOVE this show! I have all the episodes saved on my DVR – and I am really hoping that the network gives this show another chance to attract followers. I agree with previous comments – this show is WAY better than Private Practice…. and I really enjoy that show, so that’s certainly saying something! 🙂
I freakin love this show it is my favorite!!! Please dont cancel it i would have nothing else to watch… It is ands down the best show on the air right now just give it a little more time to build its name.

Off the Map is off the chain. I would trade it for Private Practice and Brothers and Sisters. I really hope the powers-that-be will give it a second chance. Too often good shows don’t get the chance to grow and develop an audience, and usually it’s because the network axes it before it gets a shot.
I really enjoyed the series and watched it every week. It was different and the scenery was beautiful as was the background music. I thought the stars were all good, some a little better than others but overall I looked forward to each episode and hope it returns next season. I’m sure there will be a lot of dissapointed viewers if it is cancelled.

This show is SO much better than Grey’s or PP!! The location, scenery, plots and characters are far more interesting than the other shows. Please don’t cancel it!!!
I think the show is great, a lot of twist and turns. I also look forward every week: so does my husband.
LOVE this show, it’s my favourite.
The unique mix of action/rescue, soap and breathtaking scenery. The cast is also amazing (this is not to say that the addition of more “eye-candy” wouldn’t hurt the ratings lol)
I still think a character-crossover with Grey’s would help ratings tremendously.
I wonder how well Private Practice would perform without the Grey’s lead in?? I think all three shows are great, but I would trade a new season of OTM for both of the other shows!
