ABC’s mid-season medical drama, Off the Map, recently concluded its first season on the air. The alphabet network’s been looking for a new hit drama and this one was produced by veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. How does Off the Map stack up? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two?
Off the Map revolves around six doctors who have “lost their way” and travel to a remote South American jungle to help those in need and to try to rediscover the reasons why they wanted to become physicians. The series features the talents of Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The medical drama premiered with a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The TV series won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. ABC decided to give Off the Map another chance to attract viewers by rerunning the first episode the following night, in place of a Private Practice rerun, and it retained much of the Grey’s Anatomy lead-in audience.
Unfortunately, that’s still not a great start and subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Off the Map is the second-lowest scripted series on ABC that hasn’t already been officially cancelled, averaging a 1.7 in the demo and 4.96 million viewers. It ranks below doomed No Ordinary Family and just above doomed Detroit 1-8-7. In short, unless ABC really needs to keep Shonda Rhimes happy, there is no reason why the network would bring Off the Map back next year for season two.

This was the most amazing show I’ve seen in a long long time. It beats the hell out of reality tv. The characters are amazing and so easy to identify with. Give it another chance with a better time slot. This show deserves it! If you take this away I swear I’m boycotting ABC!
We love this show and watch every episode. We have programmed it so we won’t miss it. Finally something where you have to think. But this is probably the downfall of the show. Most viewers these days rather watch brainless reality shows. Where has our society gone…?
I love Off the Map and would be very disapointed to see it go off the air. As is I missed the last episode because of changing from one provider to another and everything is on DVR (never watch commercials) so I must catch up on line. Please come back for second season

Very surprised to hear Off the Map had such low ratings????Who does the rating, you need to pick new Nielsen viewers. I agree with everyone who has commented so far. THIS IS A GREAT RE-FRESHING show.. I have Charter Comm for cable and I have been able to re-watch and re-watch and yes re-watch the episodes up to 3-4 times, because finally there is a show that has captured and held my attention. We have REALLY enjoyed Off the Map. Anyone I talked to loved it also. PLEASE don’t take it off. I don’t know how you do your surveys but I know people who would rush home just to watch it. Again PLEASE don’t cancell it. Thank you.
You have to keep off the map. I watch it every week and my son who is away at college watches it on his computer the next day. we then Talk thurs. night and talk about it. It’s something special we do each week. His dad and he talk about how football practice is going of course and all that stuff but this is something that we share. I really enjoyed the show. However, I did miss the last episode the first time it premièred. I believe if they moved the show to a more reasonable time (8PM, 7PM, 6PM) instead of 10PM at night, it would gain more viewers. I hope they bring it back for another season.

Loved the show OFF THE MAP!!!! Asked several people if they watched—didn’t know what show I was talking about. Very poor advertising . Do hope it gets another season and some ads are run in advance. It was my favorite show of this year!!! Soooooo tired of thw shows being chosen—-no wonder the regular network channels are not being watched. Please keep OFF THE MAP on this fall!!!!!!!

I agree with Rhonda, poor advertising. My niece told me about it and I am now a fan of the show. Hope you will give it another chance.
