In August of last year, Starz renewed Outlander for a second season after only one episode of the series had aired. Now, there are rumors that season two has been cancelled. What’s going on?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
As fans of the series know all too well, Outlander is currently on hiatus. Starz decided to split the first season’s 16 episodes into two groups. The first eight finished airing in late September and the second set will begin running on April 4th. It’s a long wait but the Outlander TV show will certainly be back.
While the show doesn’t draw big ratings, it’s doing very well for Starz. The audience grew quite a bit over the course of the first eight episodes. The mid-season finale drew 1.42 million viewers — nearly twice as many as watched the series debut. Networks and cable channels really like to see that kind of trend.
It seems that the cancellation rumor stems from a site called National Report which creates fictional stories with just enough credible information in them to make them believeable.
Starz has not cancelled their plans for a second season of Outlander. The cable channel is heavily promoting the second half of the first season and Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has also confirmed that the cancellation is a hoax.
This month, executive producer Ronald D. Moore confirmed that filming of season two will begin in May. The story will take some of the characters to another country but production will continue to be based in Scotland.
Here’s a preview for the rest of season one, as well as a preview scene:
What do you think? Are you looking forward to the return of Outlander?
Honestly it didn’t watch the show when it aired but now that I’ve seen it on starz on demand I was ready for season 2. I hope it isn’t canceled.
I have been waiting for the second half ended. Don’t understand the need to separate the episodes.
To my surprise, I LOVE this series! I didn’t watch it while it was airing on Starz, but later I caught all the episodes (so far) on Optimum On Demand. I like very few series on the premium (pay) channels~ NONE on ABC,CBS,NBC,or FOX I was a BREAKING BAD obsessed fanatic, also loved DEXTER, & now it’s all about DOWNTOWN ABBEY & “BETTER CALL SAUL” for me. But I am a student of History and come from Scottish Lineage, so I gave the show a try. Thank You Starz for getting it right !! KEEP OUTLANDER COMING!!! Finicky & Very… Read more »
Do So love all the Outlander books……. and have for 20 years!
Diana Gabaldon is brilliant, as is Ron D. Moore in bringing such a huge story to the small screen……. love all the actors too!
Look forward to seeing many years of this series both in print, as well as on the screen!
Well done to the author all the film makers and crew and to the oh so talented stars who bring these wonderfully vivid characters to life!

Love the books and love the series. Can’t wait for April.
I cannot wait – hurry up April. I need more Jamie. Isn’t it strange how we can fall “in love” with a fictional character so easily? I guess it is a testament to the actor’s skill in bringing to life the character he is given. It also doesn’t hurt that the actor who portrays Jamie is a very handsome man!!!!!
Tim keep outlander
Really enjoy this show!
We are totally looking forward to the next series of “Outlander” and to the second season. My husband, whose father is a Scot from Glasgow, hooked me. Now I’m an addict!! I have just completed reading the first six volumes and have begun the next. I should probably finish before April 4. I particularly enjoy the fact that the series is so true to the written word. I understand that a 9th volume has been commissioned and look forward to that, as well. The fine writing of Ms. Gabaldon, her research and style. I have learned much about the history… Read more »
Love the Outlander. Im a huge fan already.
Love outlander. Im a fan.
Film rarely brings a book to life like the written word on the page, but Ron Moore has done a beautiful job with “Outlander.” If I had known when the second half of Season 1 was starting, I’d have scheduled my trip to Paris for a different time! Waiting for new episodes is painful, hope they continue with all the books, love seeing the characters, settings and history come to life.
Not again. This same mistake has already been made with “Power”, so this is the second time this has happened. False TV show cancellation reports created by stupid satire or fake news sites are trying to make Starz look bad.
Can’t wait for the series to begin again. Started reading the books after seeing the first episode. Love them all. Reading book 8 now.
I only subscribed to Starz after finding that Outlander would be shown there. The books are addicting like none I have ever read in my life, and I have read many books. The historical aspect is compelling and I learned much about History. I have a hard time finding something to read now that I have devoured this series of books. I hope Galbadon can write more ASAP.
