First, FOX cancelled Lone Star and then, ABC cancelled My Generation. Not wanting to be left out, NBC has now cancelled Outlaw. The Jimmy Smits series has ceased production but viewers will still be able to see the remaining episodes.
Outlaw follows a Supreme Court Justice (Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer in order to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
The series debuted following the season finale of one of NBC’s biggest shows, America’s Got Talent, and could only attract moderate ratings. In its regular Friday night timeslot, Outlaw’s ratings have gone from bad to worse. This past Friday, the show hit a new low in the 18-49 demographic with a 0.9 rating and fell to just 4.10 million viewers. It was in last place in both categories.

As we previously reported, NBC shut down production last week, supposedly wanting to wait to see if viewership got better in later weeks. If that was actually the case, they didn’t wait very long. Outlaw has been cancelled and the cast and crew won’t be returning to production.
For the time being, NBC will fill the 10pm timeslot with an expanded edition of Dateline. The four remaining episodes of Outlaw will be seen on Saturday nights starting on October 16th. An episode won’t be seen on October 30th because of a previously schedule Shrek special. The last episode of Outlaw will air on November 13th.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see it go? Why do you think it didn’t attract a bigger audience?

NBC’s decision to cancel the tv series Outlaw is one of the reasons NBC will never be taken seriously as a brodcasting network. Outlaw was a very good show! I enjoyed the show and looked forward to viewing it. This is why good shows are on cable. NBC is as fickle as a peacock.
The best series in years on TV. amzing that it would be cancelled when there are so many bad shows on.
It is very frustrating that NBC would cancel this show after only 4 episodes! Come on, give it a chance. I am so tired of watching new shows and just when I start to get invested in the characters, they cancel it. I loved Outlaw, great actors with good chemistry and interesting stories lines. I hope another network picks them up.
Outlaw didn’t have a chance! 4 shows? It was a well written, very entertaining show and I’m sorry to see it go. With today’s recording abilities two good shows can air at the same time. I wish one of the cable networks would pick it up.
This is a complete shame. This was a great show with interesting story lines and good acting. It was nice to have a decent show on a Friday night. Hopefully another network will pick this up.
DUDE! I can’t believe they are cancelling this excellent show! I had no idea it was in jeopardy or I would have been advertising like crazy for it!!! Truly, it’s the best show that has aired in years!!!! Please let me know who I can write at NBC to get it back on. I will gladly start a letter/email campaign. We must voice our opinions. Maybe the Neilsen people have old shows they continue to watch over and over. This show was new and refreshing. Not the same old bloody cop nastiness I refuse to watch, and the story lines… Read more »
I am very sad that this show was cancelled. Maybe they should have showed this show during the week. The age demographic that is lacking for rating 18 to 49 age group usually is out on Friday and Saturday nights. Jimmy Smits is a awesome actor and the rest of the cast was awesome. Cane was another show that was really good with Jimmy Smits. I am tried of these reality shows. The network doesn’t even give a show the time it needs to catch on. Showing 3 or 4 shows of a series and then moving it without notice… Read more »
I loved this show. I especially love Jimmy Smits. There aren’t any good shows on Friday nights. I DVR this show every week and now it’s cancelled. I rated this show high on my tv line up along with the Good Wife. What a lost.
The characters and theme made for a very entertaining and gripping new show. The actors are photogenic and it is surreal that NBC does not have the patience and the ability to spot a winner
Awesome show, finally something different and great story lines, sorry to see it go it was definitely one of the shows looked I forward to watching. NBC you suck!!!! You had a good thing going there….
There aren’t any decent shows on TV on Friday night. There are so many police shows, Law and Orders and CSI’s. This show was refreshing and is about issues that affects the lives of every day people. Jimmy Smits is an incredible actor and every time he gets a decent series, it gets cancelled. Since he has no competition for viewing on Friday nights, I vote it stays. It is bad enough that networks don’t cater to people that stay home on Friday and Saturday nights. Keep this show on the air and have the cast return to production is… Read more »
I’m sooooooooo tired of watching NEW shows to only have them cancelled. Pretty soon NO ONE will watch NEW SHOWS because of this. Any wonder this is cancelled now too? Tired, tired, tired of it all. I enjoyed this show and the topics covered. Guess people would rather watch only reality T.V. (which is so far from REAL REALITY)
I love the show, looked forward to each episode and watched it every week On Demand or on the internet, if I feel asleep before it aired. Bad decision to cancel. Fresh ideas, good story lines, great concept a justice stepping down and finding out first hand how his decisions on the court affect everyday human beings. This was definitely a show worth watching and one that could have enlightened us all on the role of the supreme court. Very timely with the recent appointments. It takes time to build a audience, short-sighted execs looking for instant successes and over-night… Read more »
65 yr’s old and never been asked my opinion, neilson shmelson.
This was refreshing, no fake reality junk, more in line with a few great men. of sorts.
the concept was very timely, BRING IT BACK, or sell it to halmark or some one else who cares.
mj mich.
We thought it was a good new show!
