First, FOX cancelled Lone Star and then, ABC cancelled My Generation. Not wanting to be left out, NBC has now cancelled Outlaw. The Jimmy Smits series has ceased production but viewers will still be able to see the remaining episodes.
Outlaw follows a Supreme Court Justice (Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer in order to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
The series debuted following the season finale of one of NBC’s biggest shows, America’s Got Talent, and could only attract moderate ratings. In its regular Friday night timeslot, Outlaw’s ratings have gone from bad to worse. This past Friday, the show hit a new low in the 18-49 demographic with a 0.9 rating and fell to just 4.10 million viewers. It was in last place in both categories.

As we previously reported, NBC shut down production last week, supposedly wanting to wait to see if viewership got better in later weeks. If that was actually the case, they didn’t wait very long. Outlaw has been cancelled and the cast and crew won’t be returning to production.
For the time being, NBC will fill the 10pm timeslot with an expanded edition of Dateline. The four remaining episodes of Outlaw will be seen on Saturday nights starting on October 16th. An episode won’t be seen on October 30th because of a previously schedule Shrek special. The last episode of Outlaw will air on November 13th.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see it go? Why do you think it didn’t attract a bigger audience?

Seems every time Jimmy Smits gets a series that is really good, that we like, he gets canceled, Why not put it on a different night or put it on when Dancing with the Stars is on season break. Come on
Seems as though every time Jimmy Smits is given a series that I really liked, he’s canceled.
This absolutely sucks! I would DVR it to make sure I wouldn’t miss it. What a disappointment.
Outlaw is fantastic and I’m so SICK and TIRED of Dateline…..get it off the air, with all the reality shows. Give me some real entertainment and bring back OUTLAW!
I am very dissapointed to see this cancelled. This is one of the best new dramas in awhile. It’s way better than Fringe or Chuck in my opinion, but they are still on the air. And the lame comedies of Running Wilde, Modern Family and Community also managed to still survive. Did they ever cancel Undercover’s yet….if not, they should. Maybe ABC will look into picking this show back up considered they’ve cancelled two already this year….including The Whole Truth….another of my favorites this year. What is television coming to this day in age? All the good stuff goes and… Read more »
This was a really good show! Too bad. NBC did a very poor job of promoting this show, and placed it in time slots that made it doomed for failure. This show had relevent and thought-provoking topics, unlike some of the successful, waste-of-time shows that are “successful”.
This is a sad commentary on the mind-set of the American public. (Also, I beieve it would have been a great show for high school social studies teachers to use as a tool for discussion.)
I am very sorry to see this go! It was really good!!
It was my new favorite show. I have always loved Jimmy Smits in everything I’ve seen him in (really loved him on West Wing). The show had very little chance given the Friday night time slot, especially considering that fall season is high school football season. Really? Who sits home and watches t.v. on Friday night? I watched it online most of the time or recorded it. Please bring it back and give it a time slot that has some chance of success.
This was a great show. Why do the networks take off the great shows and keep the awful ones, especially the ones that have so much violence and graphic content. The actors were wonderful and the storylines always very good. Another disappointing decision made by the network!!!!! 🙁
My husband and I loved this show. We recorded it every week because we are not at home on Friday nights … It’s our “date night”. The time slot was probably the problem for those who couldn’t record it. I’m very sad that a series of this caliber was cancelled.
Finally a decent, worthwhile show on tv and you cancel it! Who’s making these decisions? They’re not fit to do their job! Bring this spectacular show back or lose viewers.
Another excellent show down the tubes! What does the network want???? It was a fabulous show, and I’m sorry it’s been cancelled. Guess they don’t want quality!
NBC cancels alot of shows to quickly but this is by far the biggest mistake to cancel the show “OUTLAW” this is a great show with an excellent cast and had the potential to be a long running hit show. It was aired in a bad time slot then moved to a worse time slot with almost no warning yet the message boards and facebook pages have thousands of fans who dont want to see the show get cancelled. Whoever is making these decisions needs to be fired immediately. I hope CBS will pick up the show like they did… Read more »
This is absolutely a “WTF” moment!! Such great story lines and acting. I looked forward to watching this each and every week! Yet they leave crappy shows on the air that have no substance or commitment to good solid, workmanship. What a mess! I hope another network will pick up this great show and wipe the ground with NBC!! They have truly lost their standing with the American public.
I absolutely loved the show, Great social issues every week and the interaction between the onscreen cast was excellent! I wish the “Studio Heads” would pull themselves out of their butts and see the light…. the show shouldn’t be cancelled!
