First, FOX cancelled Lone Star and then, ABC cancelled My Generation. Not wanting to be left out, NBC has now cancelled Outlaw. The Jimmy Smits series has ceased production but viewers will still be able to see the remaining episodes.
Outlaw follows a Supreme Court Justice (Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer in order to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
The series debuted following the season finale of one of NBC’s biggest shows, America’s Got Talent, and could only attract moderate ratings. In its regular Friday night timeslot, Outlaw’s ratings have gone from bad to worse. This past Friday, the show hit a new low in the 18-49 demographic with a 0.9 rating and fell to just 4.10 million viewers. It was in last place in both categories.

As we previously reported, NBC shut down production last week, supposedly wanting to wait to see if viewership got better in later weeks. If that was actually the case, they didn’t wait very long. Outlaw has been cancelled and the cast and crew won’t be returning to production.
For the time being, NBC will fill the 10pm timeslot with an expanded edition of Dateline. The four remaining episodes of Outlaw will be seen on Saturday nights starting on October 16th. An episode won’t be seen on October 30th because of a previously schedule Shrek special. The last episode of Outlaw will air on November 13th.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see it go? Why do you think it didn’t attract a bigger audience?

I agree with all the good comments. Friday night was a bad night slot against Blu Bloods with Tom Selleck. I really wish you would bring Outlaw back.
was it really canceled because of not enough viewers or did the show step on some toes in the real world??? I love the show. I love Jimmy Smits in the show, he’s a great actor. This is one of my new favorite shows and I was so looking forward to the next episode!! I think you just need a different night to aire it. Bring it back. Bring back Justice!!!!
Im very sorry to see it go they should have gave it a better chance
I enjoyed watching Outlaw.Give the show a chance. Some other shows on NBC are tasteless. JIMMY SMITS WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRING THE SHOW BACK!!!!!!!
The Networks -in general- are committing suicide. They are allowing shows a few
flashes of airtime and then checking with the Neilson rating company to see what to do.
I wouldn’t contract with the Networks to air my show unless they promised me and
my crew a full 13 week season, regardless of the Neilson dynasty!
BRING OUTLAW BACK! It is a great show and displays what a real patriot and “classic” politician would do!
TBS, if NBC does not reinstate this show. Please do a CONAN.
I loved this show. I’m sorry to see they are cancelling it after such a short run.
Why do all ratings have to be based on what 18 to 49 year olders view? Do you not think that the 49+ people watch TV or buy sponsored products? If that is what you think, you are wrong!
My husband and I like Outlaw and want it back. We do not watch reality shows because they are not real. They are an insult to the intelligence of smart people. Reality shows are for frivolous and immature people
I loved this show! I set my DVR to record it and when I played the episode scheduled for Friday 10/15/10 I see Dateline! How unwarranted of NBC to cancel such an intellectually stimulating show with great actors. This is terrible! I certainly understand about ratings but it was placed in a time slot that is signaled doom from the start. Don’t these executives realize that adults need shows that stimulate the mind instead of all the inane reality shows? We invest our time trying to determine which shows are up to our standards and then it gets canceled because… Read more »
aaawwwww geeze – this is a wonderful show – Jimmy Smits is a huge favorite in this family. Why can’t we cancell some of the idiotic reality shows instead. Please, please, please don’t let this show go down the tubes – it’s terrific.
I agree totally!
Why is it that so many really good shows get cancelled? “Nothing Sacred” was excellent; also, “Providence”; and now, “Outlaw”. I agree with the comment above about “Dateline”. If it HAS to be shown, it could tell the story in 30 minutes instead of wasting 2 hours! Jimmy Smits is excellent and the others are interesting. Please bring “Outlaw” back! At least its story lines have intelligence and even (gasp!) spirituality!
This is a great show. Jimmy Smits is great in this show!
Why didn’t they change nights, instead of cancel? My family loves it also. It’s smart and interesting.
That must be why it was cancelled!
First his show Cane on CBS,now Outlaw.Do you people have a vendetta against Jimmy Smits? He’s really a good actor.Oh I think I have it.A Supreme Court Justice didn’t like it?Instead of cancelling, why not try it on another night?I mean I like the Law and Order shows, but this one was good show also. You love to bait and switch…….I suppose this is another that was decided by the Nielsen ratings??????
I enjoy this show immensely. I find it interesting, informative, and the cast is a joy to watch. It’s smart TV. As for expanded versions od Dateline? I object to the tawdry and mindless airing of murder who-done-its. Lift up! Get smart! You’re boring your audience to death and harming us all with the endless spewing of crime mysteries. Shame on you for not honoring the higher intellect of your viewers.
Really liked this show. Jimmy Smits is a great actor. Too bad the reality shows stay on the air as they really stink. Our family watches many good shows on CBS. Bring Outlaw back. Air it on a different night. That’s why the ratings weren’t as good.
Totally agree with this.
