First, FOX cancelled Lone Star and then, ABC cancelled My Generation. Not wanting to be left out, NBC has now cancelled Outlaw. The Jimmy Smits series has ceased production but viewers will still be able to see the remaining episodes.
Outlaw follows a Supreme Court Justice (Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer in order to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
The series debuted following the season finale of one of NBC’s biggest shows, America’s Got Talent, and could only attract moderate ratings. In its regular Friday night timeslot, Outlaw’s ratings have gone from bad to worse. This past Friday, the show hit a new low in the 18-49 demographic with a 0.9 rating and fell to just 4.10 million viewers. It was in last place in both categories.

As we previously reported, NBC shut down production last week, supposedly wanting to wait to see if viewership got better in later weeks. If that was actually the case, they didn’t wait very long. Outlaw has been cancelled and the cast and crew won’t be returning to production.
For the time being, NBC will fill the 10pm timeslot with an expanded edition of Dateline. The four remaining episodes of Outlaw will be seen on Saturday nights starting on October 16th. An episode won’t be seen on October 30th because of a previously schedule Shrek special. The last episode of Outlaw will air on November 13th.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see it go? Why do you think it didn’t attract a bigger audience?

There are too many attorney, doctor and cop shows on. I liked Outlaw too but the 10pm slot is filled with the same type shows. I forgot it was even on after the first episode.
One more thing. I agree with above poster, heres to hoping TNT picks up this show. They already did the smart thing and picked up Southland (same scenario small ratings to start and cancelled) thats the best cop show on TV. TNT is turning itself into the best channel for these good dramas. You know shows that actually have some depth and good acting. All I know is we are 10 years in and I still can’t stand reality shows
Man NBC is just plain stupid- Their lineup blows, they finally have a good show (who doesn’t love Jimmy Smits) and they cancel barely into it. I don’t understand if you go through all this effort for a show let it run a full season or atleast until New Year and get 10 episodes in. Most people are probably like me. I dvr both Outlaw and Blue Bloods, go to HS Football game or whatever and then come home and watch them or watch them Saturday. I gotta say I liked having a good show on Friday. This was just… Read more »
i think this show is fantastic! it should definately be given a second chance. and, a different time slot.
I think if Jimmy Smit’s character had had more ‘character’ befitting of an older former member of the Supreme Court it would have done better. His gambling and the younger women in his life were a turn-off. A more mature personal relationship, and a more ‘fleshed-out’ life of his character might have saved the show. But as it was, it was doomed from the start.
What is the matter with you people. You finally get a program on that actually has some depth and you cancel it before it actually has a chance. No wonder your network is going down the tubes. Guess Blue Bloods will get the lions share of the 10 PM slot!
Jimmy Smits is a great actor. It’s to badit was cancelled, the show was entertaining with a good script
I think this show was very good and should be given a different time slot, if execs are not happy….I gues if they cancel it I will be watching “yes to the dress”..not my choice for sure.
NBC what are you thinking!!! Outlaw is one of the best shows this season, please give this creative and entertaining show a second chance!
I think this show should have been given more of a chance. Not every show is going to take off in it’s first few showings. But here is the biggest reason and I really don’t understand the mentality of you tv execs that make these decisions. YOU PUT THE SHOW ON FRIDAY NIGHTS AT 10 PM! Are any or all of you ever home on a Friday night at 10pm because I know I’m not and and I’m 55 years old. 99.9% of the people I know are never home at that time. Most of us look forward to our… Read more »
Typical NBC? First the show was put on the wrong night(Thursday at 10:00 would have been a much better day and time slot), second you didn’t advertise the show, third you didn’t give the show a chance. If you need someone to work on your schedule just call I know I can do a better job than the people you have working on it now. I could put together a schedule with there canceled shows and it would be better than what they have on now. NBC has been in last place in ratings of the big 3 for years… Read more »
I agree with the others. You did not give this show enough time to find its audience. Canceling a show after only three weeks is crazy. TV viewing habits have changed and people tape a lot of shows to watch later. I had Outlaw set on series so I would not miss a show. Oh my bad! There are no more shows to watch or tape.
Can’t begin to understand how NBC programmers think!! Outlaw was a fresh look at the justice system: the good, the bad and everything in between. Airing any NEW show on a Friday night is NOT good programming. I hope that NBC rethinks its decision and brings Outlaw back.
This show needs to be given a second chance in a new time slot. Typical of NBC to never give quality shows a chance to build viewership. Shame on NBC!
NBC, it’s a great show. You didn’t give it enough time to develop a following. It’s so much better than that Selleck drivel it’s opposite but you didn’t give it the publicity or the time to gain a following. Don’t cancel it. Advertise it, and change it’s time slot. Great writers and great actors. Give Outlaw the chance it deserves. I’m so upset at NBC’s choices this season, and the poor judgment continues. After what you did to Law & Order, Outlaw is the only NBC show I watch besides SVU. No you didn’t get me with LOLA, and now… Read more »
