Over the past year, TNT really cleaned house by cancelling several of their drama series. They’re supposedly now favoring “edgier” series. Does Proof, a show that focuses on death and the afterlife, fit with that new strategy? How will it do in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Proof, Doctor Carolyn “Cat” Tyler (Jennifer Beals) recently lost her son, saw her marriage end, and become estranged to her teenage daughter. Cat is persuaded by cancer-stricken billionaire Ivan Turing (Matthew Modine) to search for evidence that death is not the end and this takes her on a deeply personal and emotional journey. The rest of the cast includes David Sutcliffe, Joe Morton, Edi Gathegi, Caroline Rose Kaplan, Callum Blue, and Annie Thurman.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
8/18 update: If you ran TNT, would you cancel or keep this series?
9/24 update: TNT has cancelled Proof after one season. Details here.
Final season averages: 0.31 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.12 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like watching the Proof TV series on TNT? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
I love this show! Please renew it! I’ve already lost one show I loved, Forever. I hate sitcoms and goofy young kid shows, and think there’s less intelligent shows on tv for adults. Proof is syinteresting and fresh! The concept is great, so please don’t cancel it.
Louise I couldn’t agree more. Proof is an excellent show. Great writing. And with a cast that includes Matthew Modine, Jennifer Beals, and Joe Morton how can you go wrong. And as for the cancelled show Forever. That was one of only two shows I definitely wanted to see renewed last season. Forever was a great show. They really made us care for those characters. And I for one wanted to see what was going to happen to them. I’m very concerned for Proof. A lot of the shows I really enjoy seem to get cancelled after their first season.… Read more »
I love this show. I have done a few regressions with my psychologist friend and they are amazing. This show won’t be liked by skeptics but I will keep watching it because there is so much truth in it. I know people who have had near death experiences while in surgery. It is a very interesting subject and very timely.
I love this show. Can’t wait for the next week to see what happen next. I would love to see this show to continue for another season. I would rate the show Proof at 100%. Jennifer Beals is awesome.
Proof is absolutely brilliant! The way this show goes into this important topic is unique, it is not dogmatic, not judgemental, but open minded, scientifically and dares to ask question, dares to go under the surface. This show hits the spirit of the time – I wish that it leads people to ask more questions, to deal with this topic and be open to this journey. Beside the brilliant theme, there are amazingly talented and passionate actors on this show, an awesome cast and great producers. Thank you so much to to all of them for giving us such an… Read more »
West time can I Wachowski it in Bogota Colombia?
I love Proof. I have to DVR it every week because I have to be to work at 5am. But I look forward to the weekend so I can watch it. Please don’t cancel it. I was hooked from the very first episode. It’s really good.
Proof is refreshing and interesting. There hasn’t been a show like it. The cast is wonderful while the plot is riveting. Thank you TNT for this series!
Proof is refreshing and interesting. By here hasn’t Ben a show like it. The cast is wonderful while the plot is riveting. Thank you TNT for this series!
Damn good show!! Jennifer Beals is excellent… Interesting and very watchable… Which probably means it will be canceled.. Too bad as it is one of the only shows I watch on TNT…
Found the show very interesting. Beals has just the right edge for a cardio thoracic surgeon. Also, enjoy the African Intern & the mother daughter relationship. I hope there’s a second season as I would like to see the journey Beals character takes as the season progresses. Please renew.
I suppose folks can talk about how much they and their gazillion friends love and watch Proof, but those numbers speak for themselves. The viewership continues to drop every week and the ratings are equal to or lower than for shows that have already been cancelled. There may be other factors that determine if a show gets renewed for another season but for now things are looking more like Proof will be a 10 episode mini-series.
That third episode was better than most movies.
I think this had better be renewed.
I love this show! I love watching a show like this with the after life experience .
Very interesting.
For what it’s worth I love the show. We don’t know what the Jennifer Beals character was like before her sons death & I think being cold/distant is a coping skill to avoid closeness or let others see her sorrow. Life after death is an intriguing subject & her scientific mind (Like many people) won’t let her go there…..yet. I hope the show isn’t cancelled.
What!? You stop watching a show because the character is not likeable. If you have ever
had to deal with a cold unfeeling Cardiothoracic surgeon like we had giving our three year old son a dire prognosis you would know that she is portraying the character right on. I have a zillion friends and family who love this new show. it will get renewed.
If I had to deal with a ***** like the character on Proof, I’d find another doctor!
Well, apparently your “zillion friends” isn’t enough. Proof’s ratings fell nearly 19% over the past week, and its current rating sits below Dallas and Perception (both cancelled) and sits about even with Franklin and Bash (also cancelled). So, Proof is in perilous territory. Better find another zillion to help you out or your show won’t be around long.
Of COURSE like-ability is essential to the longevity of a show! Why waste time watching a show when you hate the main character? There are many more enjoyable things to do with my time!
@Nan: Exactly! Most of us deal with pretentious jerks all day at work. We don’t want to come home and watch them on TV, when we’re trying to relax. There has to be some likeable quality. Take Dr. House, for example. He had a ton of flaws, but there was just something about his character that made you like him in spite of all that. Although I will say that, in the last episode, Beals’ character did actually start to show some personality that went beyond b*tch.
Thanks for the positive strokes!
