TV show description:
A legal drama, based on an Australian series of the same name, this show follows the comedic and chaotic life of a criminal defense lawyer. Keegan Deane (Greg Kinnear) is often described as many things but none of them are very flattering.
Brilliant and frustratingly charming, Keegan is one of life’s great addicts. His staggering lack of discretion and inability to self-censor land him the cases that nobody else will touch. Behind that lies a resolute optimism and belief in justice that fuel his dogged determination to defend those who seem beyond redemption.
He always tries to do the right thing, but at the same time struggles to save himself from the many self-destructive elements that plague his own life, such as his overindulgence in women, gambling and other excesses.
Keegan gets a majority of his cases from his best friend since law school, Ben Leon (John Ortiz). Ben’s married to Scarlet (Necar Zadegan), another of Keegan’s old friends. She’s an Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney and quite often Keegan’s opponent in court.
Keegan also has plenty of personal trials and tribulations, including his mounting debt to his bookie and his overlapping liaisons with various women. Melissa “Mikki” Partridge (Bojana Novakovic) is his favorite prostitute and de-facto love interest.
And then there’s his ongoing battle with the IRS. He’s being prosecuted by David Potter (David Harbour), an IRS tax attorney. He looks ten years younger than his age and has been nicknamed “Harry Potter” by Keegan.
Thankfully Keegan has Leanne Zander (Tara Summers), his no-nonsense assistant, to help clean up his messes. His ex-wife, psychologist Maddy (Miranda Otto), begrudgingly acts as his therapist. She’s also the mother of their hormonal son, Finn (Ian Colletti), who displays many of the same tendencies as his father.
Episode #13 — “Man’s Best Friend”
Keegan defends a close friend and well-respected doctor accused of animal cruelty, Scarlet’s campaign against David Potter takes a nasty turn when information about Mikki’s past gets leaked to the press and Ben gets tied up in a federal investigation when his firm’s finances are questioned.
First aired: April 5, 2014
What do you think? Do you like the Rake TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for another season?
This show is so much fun! Of course Fox cancelled it. Fox should just create shows and then pass them onto other networks who have longer attention spans than a gnat!
Love this show and love Gregg Kinnear. DO NOT CANCEL!! An entertaining show with depth and comedy. Keep it on the tube!!!
Its a pitty that the ratings were poor on this show – there was a brillant cast and writing team behind it.
The Australian version had 3 seasons and finished this year ,maybe they will have more seasons in Australia after the unsucessful run in the states.Peter Duncan is a brillant writer and he had a job adapted the scripts to a new audience.
To all the RAKE lovers watch the 3 seasons of the Australian version you will love it
My wife and I really liked this show sucks that it over
This sucks. I loved this show. It was not cookie cutter like so many other shows are. BOO FOX!
I love, love, love Greg Kennear and all the other actors! I cannot believe this show got cancelled. Doesn’t Fox know that Greg Kennear is a movie star and a good actor? What was wrong with this show that it had to be cancelled? I’m going to have to stop watching Fox shows if they keep cancelling them so quickly! Why get involved the characters and the storyline if it’s just going to be cancelled? Bring it back!!! Please! And also, please give shows a fighting chance, you’re cancelling shows too fast, especially Rake, it really was too good of… Read more »
I totally agree with you.
I think Rake was fascinating because the characters were believable and human. There was no “drama” but rather real-life events that you could see yourself experiencing.
I’m extremely disappointed to hear that this TV show has been cancelled. At least I know that Greg Kinnear will continue to work on great projects (as he has earned, and well deserves!), but I will miss the other characters on the show. It was so entertaining! If any bigwig out there is still wavering, let me tell you (plus the others who will and have yet to weigh in), this is a very entertaining show! So many just don’t get a chance anymore. 🙁
Rake is an awesome show! one of the few we look forward to watching. Do Not Cancel Rake!
