TV show description:
From creator and director John Singleton, Rebel is a gritty and morally ambiguous, “ripped from the headlines,” scripted police drama. The TV series explores the complex, dynamic relationship between the African-American community and the police, from the perspective of officers of color.

Oakland P.D. Detective Rebecca “Rebel” Knight (Truitt) is wired to play by the rules. Being both black and female, she has had to be better, smarter, and harder working, in order to succeed. Over the past three years, Rebel has solved more homicide cases than any other detective on the force.

A U.S. Army vet and Purple Heart recipient who served in Iraq, the insightful, intelligent, and intense Rebel is both respected and feared. In a failed attempt to keep him from gunning down her little brother, Malik (Walker), Rebel ends up shooting her partner, Michael “Mack” McIntyre (Quinn). Following an intense Internal Affairs and criminal investigation, Knight ultimately leaves the force.

Mack made a split decision to shoot Malik and in the aftermath, he struggles with his choice. How does the killing inform his identity? Is he a good cop or a criminal?

Broken by Malik’s death, Rebel’s dad, Mr. Rene Knight (Williamson), self-medicates with alcohol, yet still tries to make his son’s life count. Now in recovery, Jackie (Jones) re-enters Rene’s life as he is preparing his wrongful death lawsuit against the police.

Rebel separated from husband Terrence “TJ” Jenkins (Smith) because while he wanted children, she did not. Since they still love one another deeply, TJ tries to break down Rebel’s walls, while at the same time pursuing a new path, another woman, and a new job.

Split between representing his police force and supporting his long-time friend Rebel, Lieutenant Charles Gold (Esposito) wants to protect the Oakland P.D.

Down-to-earth Detective Traylynn Jones (Richardson Jackson) is Mack’s new partner. Tenacious and maternal, Traylynn is more likely to go home and knit, than go out for drinks after a shift.

Rebel and TJ’s old army buddy, Kim (London) is now a mess. This war veteran seeks Rebel’s help with a killer who is out to get her.

On the verge of a successful rap career at the time of his death, the memory of Malik fuels the Black Lives Matter movement. As a newly-minted private investigator and community champion, Rebel struggles to come to terms with his loss, while simultaneously defending herself against vengeful corrupt cops.

Cheeky, yet extremely loyal, Cheena Lin (Ko) is Rebel’s closest ally. Despite her reluctance, she gets roped into Rebel’s investigation. As her best friend’s new career blossoms, Cheena joins forces with her.
