FOX has announced that the three unaired episodes of Red Band Society will run on two consecutive Saturdays — January 31st and February 7th — but that will be the end of the series. There won’t be a second season.
A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The series debuted in September to unimpressive ratings and the numbers got much worse in subsequent weeks. It was no surprise when FOX chose not to order any additional episodes. Traditionally, that’s a sure sign that a series will be cancelled but word is that FOX and ABC Studios each made efforts to keep it going.
Though Red Band Society’s ratings were too low to keep it on the air as a regular season show, the network wanted to keep it — potentially as a summer series. The catch is that that would have required a lower licensing fee. It’s a high-end series and budgets for summer shows are really tight. In the end, it’s not a big surprise that a deal couldn’t be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep it.
Execs at ABC Studios also really like the series so they tried shopping it to other outlets to keep the show alive. Ultimately there were no takers so the series is now dead.
Red Band Society will end its short run on February 7th with a pair of episodes. Hopefully the finale will give dedicated viewers some sense of closure.
What do you think? Did you like Red Band Society? Are you sorry that the show’s been cancelled? Would you have followed it to another channel?
I love the series and will really miss it. Please don’t cancel the show. I love the story lines and the characters.
RBS is so good! I’m so sad it’s being cancelled! Please reconsider!!! It’s so meaningful and heartfelt.
I love red band society! I would love it if it came back on for a second season!
My family and I love this show and are very sad to see it being canceled. Please reconsider bringing it back. It’s such a great show and story line that so many teenagers and families can relate too.
Why do thay always cancel good shows, but end up keeping the crappy ones like nikitta and co. This was the same way they cancelled outsourced. I feel so sad.
I hate they are canceling RBS…It was one of the more well-written series, and contained depth and insight that most other series do not have at all. This series did not pander to any specific minority, like Empire, which panders to every minority. Each episode left the viewer feeling touched and blessed yet empathetic to those in less healthy situations. And the acting was millions of times better than anything else I’ve seen lately on a mini series. I wish there were a way to change their minds
I would absolutely watch RBS on another channel or even as a summer season show. I’ll take what I can get! It’s really too bad it’s been canceled.
I love the show and am very sad to see it end. I was hooked from the very first episode. and yes i would have followed it to another station.
I loved this series! The messages it sent to the youth out there battling through hard times and those who aren’t were breathtaking. It really opened your eyes to life and to just live it. And with me getting over a traumatic car wreck and surgery it was a show I could connect with on so many levels. Lets protest to get it back on :’-( jerrico they sent peanuts well let’s send red bands !
I was in love with the series. It was so real. So painful to watch. Such a perfect view of how when we make ourselves vulnerable, the world is a better place. PLEASE BRING IT BACK. So what if some people don’t like to watch it simply because it is true. It is a show come true full of the human condition and all its dilemmas. WHY? I was in love… I am so so sad.
I really liked this show, but as someone who works in healthcare it is VERY unrealistic. The comedy is great and I love it. The drama pushes the envelope, which turns relatable/ empathetic moments into turn offs. This show reminds me of the show Hawthorne. Great show, but the unrealistic drama pushes the envelope way to far and turns most people off because they can relate. All in all I’ll miss Red Band Society!
That’s bull crap. This show was amazing I laughed and cried all at the same time. Boo executives u suck.
Personally I like the show and I would like nothing more for them to keep the show I loved it and I like the ending too but I still want to see more it is to good to waste.
It is so sad to see this show end. I have a daughter with medical needs who so related to the characters, their feelings, how medical staff become family and the importance of finding people who understand you so that you don’t feel alone. I thought this show was great because in a world where “reality shows” are so popular, this scripted drama portrayed a true reality that taught about friendship, the importance of empathy and the dignity in not allowing bad circumstances to define oneself. These are lessons even adults could benefit from. Good job to those who put… Read more »
I have never followed a show from the very first day it airs but Red Band Society is one that I have been through from the very first episode. I have laughed, I have cried and I have become attached to this show. It gave me hope, a reason to live life to the fullest, I have always been an outcast and this show made me see that people aren’t perfect and they are not going to be. We have our ups and our downs but if we have the right and good friends, we can get through it together.… Read more »
