Sorry, music fans. It’s officially the end of the road. As suspected last month, Roadies has been cancelled and won’t be back for a second season. While Showtime doesn’t rely on ratings like commercial channels do, this series failed to catch on with a large enough audience to warrant another season.
Created by Cameron Crowe, the Roadies comedy TV series gives an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of the backstage workers. They’re touring the United States with a successful arena-level rock band. The cast includes Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, Imogen Poots, Rafe Spall, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Peter Cambor, Colson Baker, and Ron White.
The last episode of Roadies’ 10 installment run aired on August 28th. Today, Crowe took to his blog to talk about the series and to thank the cast, crew, and fans for their support.
The Last Load-Out
Thanks to Showtime and J.J. Abrams for the opportunity to make the one and only season of “Roadies.” My mind is still spinning from the giddy highs of working with this epic cast and crew. Though we could tell a thousand more stories, this run ends with a complete ten-hour tale of music and love. Like a song that slips under your skin, or a lyric that keeps speaking to you, we hope the spell of “Roadies” lingers. It was life-changing experience for all of us.
So much appreciation goes out to the sensational actors and crew who lived and breathed these stories and characters with their whole hearts. We became a family, our own music-loving troupe. Thanks also to the musicians who lived so comfortably in the world of acting. And thanks to all at Bad Robot, and Winnie Holzman, great collaborators all. Big thanks to our fans for watching and cheering us on. We’ll see you soon with a new project… and many of the same actors, I’m sure. Here’s a little glimpse of the last night of filming. This is what every day felt like.
Love,
Cameron CroweSpecial Thanks to our directors and magic-makers like (get ready for some names!)… Irving Azoff, David Nevins, Robin Gurney, Gary Levine, Gail Levin, Thomas Yatzko, Kathy Lingg, “Mighty” Clay Griffith, Kelly Curtis, Ben “Socks” Stephenson, Peter Roth, Joel Schwartz, Tom Schnaidt, Mike DeGrazzio, David Bilow, Elliott Eisman, Neal Preston, Jon Kasdan, Gavin “Hai” Kleintop, Greg Mariotti, Andy Fischer, Cara McKeown, Joel Sinensky, David Spade(!), Peter Schindler, Len Goldstein, Katie McGrath, Tom “100%” Mackay, Michele Anthony, Eric “We Gave Up European Dates with Neil Young!” Johnson, and of course huge thanks to the real bright-light Roadie who loaned us her name and her indominable spirit – Kellianne Murphy.
What do you think? Did you like the Roadies TV show? Why do you think that it didn’t catch on with a larger audience?
I also got a subscription to Showtime to watch Roadies and LOVED the show! I was looking forward to seeing where season 2 was headed. Guess I’ll be saving $8.99 a month by canceling Showtime.
I can’t believe that Roadies was cancelled. I loved it. I bought a subscription to Showtime just to see it, so I’ll be giving Showtime the boot. Really bad decision.
I’m so very disappointed that roadies was cancelled, I was really looking forward to the next seasons and was telling everyone I knew about it. I watched all episodes a second time when I got my husband interested it! It appealed on so many levels, the music, the relationships, creativity, characters, writing, existential yearnings, hope and change, life and death. The assembly of actors was wonderful each one added an important dimension, iconic even. There is nothing else like it on tv now and will leave a huge hole behind. Please please tell me we can sign a petition to… Read more »
I loved this show so much that I went up to the Showtime offices and told them! Every show. Was like a movie-so well written. I’m very disappointed….
So so disappointed in the cancelation of Roadies. It was written and acted with such talent and truth. Nothing with any substance seems to get renewed. Shows are not given a chance to catch on , in this instant gratification world . Shame on Showtime!!!!
This was so superior to Vinyl and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll in that the characters seemed real & not forced. The writing was very well done in that we could laugh, cry and ponder at the situations presented in each and every episode. This is one show that another station should pick up because this deserves to go further.
This is terrible, I loved that show.
This is total crap that such a great show is coming to a end already. I’m truly sad that other people didn’t catch onto it soon enough to give it the love it deserved. It was very well casted and written, I’m very sad to see it go. I’ve never thought enough of a canceled show to take the time to write about it but this is a very worthy first.
We only just discovered Roadies this past week and sadly, not during the regular season. What a wonderful show! Heartbroken to know that it isn’t being renewed. Only hope some other wise app will pick it up. For our generation the music was so relateable, and the stories of the young Roadies so engaging. Please bring it back!! Every bit as good as Mad Men, Shameless or Homeland.
Amazing show! It’s a Sad commentary that such a fresh innovative show was sacked. Adults want shows with heart and soul, not mindless dribble.
The show had a 0.09 average live rating, which is horrendous. If more people watched, maybe there would a better chance of it being renewed. Practically nobody did.
I loved the show. Just sorry I didn’t catch onto it sooner and spread the word.
I, too, am devastated that Showtime wilt bring back Roadies. How do we start a campaign to get Netflix, Hulu, etc. to pick up the show. I’d even put up with commercials!
Damn, i was really looking forward to a second season.
Atleast we have this, and it will always be beautiful.
Thanks to everyone who made this amazing show happen!
I absolutely fell in love with Roadies, right from the get go. First episode in and I was hooked. I saved Roadies for the last show I’d watch after all the violent, mayhem, disturbing shows I’d PVR (Criminal Minds, True Detective…) and Roadies would put a smile back on my face and centre my universe so I could sleep at night. I will miss the entire cast, I especially liked Imogene and her wild-eyed innocence and devotion to the purity of the band she so loved. Each episode left me wanting more, and I am only too saddened to know… Read more »
I am DEVASTATED! “Roadies” was heartfelt, funny, poignant & brilliant. And the music; GOD, the music. But it ended beautifully, so I guess I’m okay with it. This show only failed because of lack of marketing – if Showtime marketed it like it did “Ray Donovan,” it would have been a smash. Surely only people who never watched the show didn’t like it.
How are people who didn’t watch the show the only ones who didn’t like it? They have no understanding of the quality of the show if they haven’t seen it. Most critics saw it and didn’t like it, and some viewers probably didn’t. I don’t have Showtime, so I can’t say if it is good or bad. But you can’t say that someone didn’t like what they haven’t seen.
Excellent point, critic. People get very sensitive when their shows get cancelled tho… But this one was obviously coming, it was panned by critics and the ratings were off the charts LOW! Personally, I really enjoyed the first episode but it started to fizzle fast afterwards and I simply stopped watching.
