ABC recently premiered a new police series for the summer months called Rookie Blue. Many have compared it in concept to Southland on NBC (and now TNT). Will this one stick around long enough to see season two?
Rookie Blue revolves around five rookie cops who are plunged into world of big city policing. The ensemble cast of the drama includes Missy Peregrym (Reaper), Gregory Smith (Everwood), Eric Johnson (Flash Gordon), Ben Bass, Enuka Okuma, Travis Milne, Charlotte Sullivan, Matt Gordon, Noam Jenkins, and Melanie Nicholls-King.
The TV show debuted on June 24th to a 1.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 7.24 million viewers. In the regular season, those numbers wouldn’t be cause for celebration but, in the summer months, they’re quite respectable. For the timeslot, the premiere ranked second in the demo and first in total viewers.

In week two, Rookie Blue bucked the usual trend and didn’t lose many viewers. The second episode brought in a 1.8 rating and 6.78 million viewers. If the series can sustain these numbers throughout its 13 episode season, it’s a good candidate for renewal and for returning next summer.
Also in its favor, Rookie Blue is produced in Canada through a joint venture between Canwest Broadcasting and ABC. That means it’s not costing the network as much as other scripted dramas.
What do you think? Is Rookie Blue worth watching? Would you like to see it return for season two or would you rather see it canceled?

Kutiekelcy,
Are you serious? Go watch NYPD blue, the Wire, and homicide Life on the Streets. After watching those cop shows try comparing Rookie Blue? The show has zero excitement and won’t last 2 seasons.
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! Like someone above said, Grey’s Anatomy is getting “stale” and boring. This brings the excitement back to cop shows. Everyone is young and that makes it relatable
This show will not last more than 2 seasons. The cops all look like soap opera stars and the stories are ridiculous. Instead of having police shows with great looking actors, which is not realistic when you look at cops today, why not have a show similar to NYPD Blue? ABC keeps bringing out cop shows that are comedies and/or unrealistic police plots. The secret to a successful cop show is easy: Have real life stories, develop the characters, don’t have cops that look like models, and make the show dark and realistic. TV producers show rewatch NYPD blue and… Read more »
Rookie Blue is trying to be like SOUTHLAND except without the realism or the excitement. It is not even SOUTHLAND LITE. Bring back CAR 54 Where Are You? The show should be axed ASAP. It sucks.
Comparing this show to Southland is like comparing “Burn Notice” to “Get Smart”. In our house, we call this show “Grey’s with Guns.” Personally, I’m not a big fan.
have to say, its not the best show on tv, and its completely unoriginal, but considering its a summer show and nothing else but reality shows are on, I’d say keep it as a summer show.
If it doesn’t cost much for the network and its keeping a steady level of ratings, then just keep it. Not to mention, the chemistry between that rookie cop McNally and her training officer, Sam is really awesome and I think it almost saves the show.
KEEP IT! i really love it!
Tonight was the first episode of it I watched but I will likely watch the next one, so I say keep it on for a while.
Keep this show, its amazing! Its one of the few shows i watch in the summer. The characters are great and the story line are great. I love this show and hope that it stays on.
Missy Peregrym is super hot, especially in full cop uniform. They should definitely keep the show on the air just for that.
Did not like “Rookie Blue” at all. BUT, new show should be given more time to develop, get to know the characters and “catch on”. Keep it for 3-4 more weeks and see how it does.
I agree that they should give shows more of a chance, but I think the premise behind this show is stupid. There is only so much time the main characters can be called ‘rookies’. Its a dumb idea.
This series has caught me by surprise. My wife and I decided to catch this new series due to the fact that, frankly, there is nothing else on the tube worth watching. Typically, this isn’t the type of show that catches my attention, let alone KEEP it. But, the series has done just that! It’s well written, fast enough to keep my attention, but not too fast to lose it, and – let’s face it – it’s very charming.
Rookie Blue definitely wins my approval. I just hope it survives its rookie season.
I love it so far!! Definitely, they should keep it. Grey’s is getting stale, and this fills a summer slot very well for both networks. Sam Bass is an unexpected find–keep for him alone!
At least let it play out it’s run. They are much too quick to dump programs that show some promise.
