Is Second Chance getting a second chance? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producers Howard Gordon and Rand Ravich discussed the status of their sci-fi cop drama.
The series premiered on January 13th.
Second Chance stars Rob Kazinsky as Jimmy Pritchard, an irritable sheriff who is killed at age 75. He gets another chance at life, however, when he’s resurrected as his younger self.
The series went through several changes before its current incarnation. Based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it was previously titled The Frankenstein Code before being changed to Lookinglass before being changed to Second Chance. Then, in October, FOX cut the episode order from 13 to 11.
In the interview, both Gordon and Ravich addressed the episode cut, saying it has nothing to do with FOX canceling the series early:
First of all they’re spending money on reshoots, which is great. You don’t do that for [a show you don’t believe in], but it’s also put right after American Idol. We got the Empire slot. There is not a better slot on Fox, so if that’s not a show of faith. … It really is a scheduling issue. They offered us 13 [episodes]. They said, “Do 13, but we only have 11 continuously.” For storytelling purposes we said, “So, then let’s not do it.”
Ravich added that it was them who “begged” the network to reduced the episode order so they could better tell the story:
It was our choice to tell the story in the way it should be told and not have these two little episodes hanging out there that had no meaning.”
The premiere of Second Chance did okay in the ratings, receiving about 4.7 million viewers.
What do you think? Did you watch the premiere of Second Chance? Would you continue watching the series?
I like this show and would like to see it continue. I like the sci fi aspects of it and the twins and their creepy google products.
hope it doesnt get cancelled .. my family really likes the characters and it is FUN to watch. I mean if a zombie series that is the same thing week after week can keep going , why wouldnt all the critics give this a chance . I watched RK on true blood and TD on white collar. You get rid of these shows before anyone can get a chance to get interested. Yes my husband and I wanted to know if the zombies that everyone is nuts about do anything different .. the answer NO!! Mindless show.Give it a chance.
I really like it. Hope it doesn’t get cancelled.
I really like “Second chance” & hope Fox keeps the show.
How can people decide after only a couple episodes that a show is on its way out. before it’s had any chance to really build on the storyline. Also, the one thing that bugs me most is any show that does it’s episodes sporadically, with changes in schedules: moving to different nights, or skipping a few weeks for preempting or whatever. We , fickle viewers lose interest, lose our train of thought, and can’t remember what the heck was happening, or we just lose the programs all together, and don’t know when or where to watch it especially if we… Read more »
I’m really enjoying the show. Great cast, characters and story. For those of us who will NEVER watch reality TV, its great to have something entertaining and interesting to watch.

Interesting story. Great characters. Well cast. . It’s yet another great show I’ll get hooked on only to see canceled because they move it every week to a new night and time……. I really like this show.
Yes. I get so tired of new series I realy get turned on to being cut off with never any final wrap up. I’m almost afraid to watch new shows. I like this one .
I enjoy it very much and encourage its renewal!
I enjoy it very much and cast my vote with those who urge its renewal!
The show was just moved to Friday night and we all know that Friday night shows are usually cancelled. I hope not because I like it but FOX is usually very quick on the trigger regarding that kind of things.
I wasn’t sure after the first segment but by week 3 I was hooked. It is getting more involved with real situations so it is not just a Syfy program, it is building a relationship now with the viewers.
I enjoy Second Chance. The up to date take on the Frankenstein story is refreshing. I would hate to see it cancelled before it has a chance to really find it’s audience.
