Spoilers! Season three of FOX‘s Sleepy Hollow TV series went out with a bang. In the penultimate third season episode, the show killed off the late Sheriff’s son, Joe Corbin (Zach Appelman). Sleepy Hollow has survived the departure of other heavily featured actors including Orlando Jones, John Noble, and Katia Winter. Friday’s third season finale death was a game changer, though. Nicole Beharie’s Lieutenant Abbie Mills, who, along with Tom Mison’s Ichabod Crane, is one of the two main characters, sacrificed her life to stop the Hidden One.
In an interview with TVLine, Sleepy Hollow showrunner, Clifton Campbell, said that while there will still be references to Beharie’s Abbie, the character is gone. He said the actress will not return to the show as Abbie Mills. He did say the “idea of her” will be around in the future, “but not as the character Abbie Mills.” Do you think that leaves wiggle room of some sort?
As mentioned in the report, Abbie’s death will “activate another Witness.” If Sleepy Hollow is renewed for a fourth season, Crane will have get to her, before the government does. Here is more from Campbell, via TVLine, on his plans for season four, should FOX renew the supernatural drama.
TVLINE | What can you tell me about the group that Ezra mentioned to Ichabod in the graveyard at the end of the episode? How might it manifest next season?
That’s our way in to a Season 4 that looks forward to the different understanding about what being a Witness is all about. We ran the clock out on both Abbie’s Witness relationship and how she was instrumental in bringing Ichabod into this world, and understanding and giving context and framing to what it meant to be a Witness. Then her job was done, and she did what all Witnesses apparently do, which is to pass the essence of their soul on through the bloodline. The organization… is something we’re exploring should we be fortunate enough to have a Season 4.
TVLINE | Having Abbie sacrifice herself twice in the same season — fans might think, “Well, you brought her back last time…” What’s the fundamental difference between her going into the tree and her willingly entering Pandora’s box?
Well, she knew she wasn’t coming out of the box in the finale. She knew, because of what they learned in the catacombs, that the box was missing its hope, which is at the center of darkness and gave it context, gave it form. She knew she was giving herself to the box… that that meant she would not be coming back.At the midseason break this year, it was more immediate. The Shard of Anubis was going to blow; her sister and Crane and everybody in close proximity could suffer catastrophic loss. Abbie knows she’s giving her life up at the end of Season 3 to save the world. The difference is, from the audience’s perspective, is [at the midseason break] she had fallen into a realm that we didn’t know about. She didn’t die.
What do you think? Did you watch the Sleepy Hollow TV show’s third season finale? If FOX renews Sleepy Hollow for a fourth season, will you watch it, even though Abbie is truly dead? Tell us.
It won’t matter who they bring to replace Abbie Mills…I’m one less fan. Season 3 was my last season.
Though I will very much miss the Abbey-Crane dynamic, I look forward to the new possibilities that could be reached if they renew. I eill definitely be watching for season 4. So many shows are reverting to extreme violence or homosexuality to drum up ratings but they are shallow story tellers. Sleepy Hollow has great stories and likeable characters.
I truely love the show and can’t wait to see what happens next. They portray the characters so well. It made me cry when Abby dies. She will be missed.
Without Abby it seems Team Witness is done. They had something special with Abby and Crane. It’s not often you get a duo with great chemistry. Remember Mulder and Sculley? Look at what happened when they tried to break them up, and then got rid of them both. No Abby, no Sleepy Hollow. I won’t be watching it any longer.
We will definitely watch Sleepy Hollow as it continues. Great show and has the potential storyline to be even better. Hopefully it will continue for a new season.
As long as Tom Mison is in it I will watch it. Abbie just seemed bored stiff this last season and they need to bring back the humour of the first season.
I love this show. And even though Abbie is gone, I will continue to watch. Please renew the show, it’s a great show, ratings don’t mean nothing, there is a loyal fan base. Cancel one of those boring comedy shows.
I don’t care about Abbie. She did nothing for me. She basically had one expression. Jenny is much better. I’m interested in the original characters of the story: Ichabod, Katrina, Abraham and Headless. The others, I don’t care. So if they go back to similar stories as S1, I’ll watch.
Sleepy Hollow is brilliant, and i want to see what happens in Season 4!
it’s a shame that such a progressive show where gender roles and racial relations were challenged consistently has come to this: “how she was instrumental in bringing Ichabod into this world” says the clueless showrunner for the black co-lead. have fun with your mediocrity and your new fanbase
I am very disappointed in the decision to kill off the character of “Abbie Mills”. She was one of the main reasons I watched the show. It will be interesting to see if the show can continue without the compelling dynamic between Abbie and Ichabod.
The show needs to continue and get back to more of the original historical plots, mixed with the fantasy. The Abby Mills character did nothing for this show, bad actress and it showed. I’m looking forward to seeing this show renewed with really good story lines and really interesting characters.
We love this show….it has suspense and history and comedy!!!! All of the characters are believable and fun. It’s a shame that we keep loosing shows that are entertaining and fun and without all the blood, guts and gore that a lot of programs use to keep people watching nowadays. And really, Tom Mison!!! how could we handle not seeing him every week 🙂 Charming Sweet And funny all rolled into a handsome 200 year old gentleman…. Ichabod Crane !!!!!!
YES I will watch if there’s a Season 4. One of my favorite shows!!!
My daughter and I have never missed an episode! We are very sad about Abbie being gone, but will continue to watch! Please do not cancel this show!
