Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?

DON’T cancel this show, one of the best ones on TV which includes Madame Secretary, Good Wife & How to Get Away w/Murder
Yes, keep it !!! It is an extremly well done show that keeps me wanting more. The plots are will thought out and the actors are great. I watched the season finale and can’t wait to see what happens. And you better bring Nick back, some how you need to write him back in!!!
It would be a mistake to take this show off the air!!!!!!! WE LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!! Never miss an episode! You owe it to the fans to keep it going!!!
PLEASE SAVE THIS SHOW! We never miss an episode! Can hardly wait each week for ghe next one. Take off another show! Maybe change nights. We LOVE this show!
Please keep it. I had pre-conceived ideas which almost kept me from watching the show, but I got hooked after watching the first episode. I usually don’t watch shows on NBC. Twice in the last several years I found a show on NBC that I thought was original and intelligent, only to have NBC cancel both shows. With Blacklist and State of Affairs I’ve been watching NBC programming again. I understand the “ratings are everything” mentality, but between DVR’s and internet streaming, I’m not sure the way ratings are calculated is an effective measurement. In any event, it looks like… Read more »
I think State of Affairs is one of the best on TV these days, right along side Madam Secretary and The Good Wife. Finally the females are getting their “say”, and it is working, as far as I’m concerned. I sincerely hope this show does not get cancelled. It is so well produced and Heigl is just made for this role. Please keep it on…cancelling it would be a huge mistake.
Look – Networks need to give people time to “catch” onto a show, I missed the 1st 3 episodes but I caught up, love it and I want a Season 2!!! Ways to improve the show 1) stop killing main characters for ratings (that annoys me) 2) Keep Nic and Charlie as operatives that can go on missions together fighting bad guys 3) Keep the political drama real (key being real) – it sheds a light into what really goes on and that’s interesting! In the end what we want is Good fighting Evil and prevailing. It’s that simple really.
I look forward to watching State Of Affairs, the acting and story lines are so true to our lives right now. Please do not cancel this show. I just love it.
Great show. Do not cancel.
One of the Best Shows on TV!!!! Love it!!!! Can’t wait until the new season starts!!!!
Do Not CANCEL!!!!!
I love State of Affairs. It is my #1 show, better than Madam Secretary. I am a Heigl fan and Nick is precious. It ended with a lot of directions the show could go. Don’t cancel.
Please do not cancel a great show! I am so tired of networks canceling great shows especially with such cliff hangers.
It’s a smart, timely show! Please don’t cancel it!
