Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?

Brilliant edge of your seat show!! Intelligent!
We give it a 5
I love the show. It’s so intense that I think you could get more when you watch it again. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled. If it does it proves that the executives don’t know a good show if it bit them on the nose.
NBC better keep this show, its a good one!!!
Please renew this show. My wife and I love this show and are anxiously waiting to see who was on the hill!! Please give it another shot!!
State of Affairs is one of only 3 must see shows for me all week. Please renew!
State of Affairs is one of the best shows on TV. Please don’t cancel this show. Move it onto a different time slot & I’m sure the ratings would pick up.
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL STATE OF AFFAIRS. ONE OF THE VERY FEW TV PROGRAMS I WATCH AND ENJOY. STOP MAKING EVERYONE DECISION ABOUT MONEY FOR ONCE.

One of the best shows on television…
I sure hope all these positive comments get to the right person that can save this show…..my husband and I LOVE it, and I’ve been reading all the comments and it seems like we’re not the only ones! Please renew this show, it would be crazy to leave it hanging the way you ended the last episode! I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll be back on soon !
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!pleassss keep it!
I absolutely love “State of Affairs” and it is one of my few “must see” shows. I hope and pray it won’t be cancelled!
Watching State of Affairs has been like reading a good intrigue book – you don’t want to put it down. The story line felt consistent throughout the 1st season – and it wasn’t side tracked with trying to make Heigl’s character more of a fashion icon / glamour girl, than the analyst she was portraying – which was good in my opinion – because you could focus on the story. I like her in the role, all the actors had a real feel – the writing didn’t seem contrived- and the delivery felt natural – not like “acting” – it… Read more »
After Blacklist this would be a very second choice to watch and should continue.
Love state of Affairs please don’t cancell
I love State of Affairs and really do not know what people see in the Blacklist. I personally am not impressed. Please bring State of Affairs back for a season 2. If only we actually had someone like Heigl’s character taking care of our State of Affairs.
