While most Switched at Birth TV show fans have been waiting for what seems like forever, for the season five premiere, for some, the wait is over. A select few have already seen the Switched at Birth season five opening episode, “The Call.” Furthermore, the lucky ducks got to mix and mingle with the Freeform series cast during a Pop Up Santa event at the LA School for the Deaf, where the stars made a surprise appearance.
Frequent guest star Marlee Matlin showed up first. The students were already thrilled by her appearance. She then revealed series regulars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, and Lucas Grabeel were also on hand. The crowd went wild. The fifth and final season of the Switched at Birth premieres Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 9:00pm ET/PT. Don’t miss a clip of the Pop Up Surprise, after the jump.
In the video, Maitlin said, “Switched at Birth will be remembered for breaking ground. Simple as that.”
Katie Leclerc added, “Thank you all so much for watching. You’ve changed my life forever, and hopefully we’ve had an impact on yours, as well.”
Sounding a bit choked up, Vanessa Marano said, “Thank you so much for watching, and thank you so much for making our show what it was.”
Setting up season five of Switched at Birth, Constance Marie said, “This last season of Switched at Birth is going to be so amazing. You will not be disappointed, and you will have will have closure.”
Lucas Gabreel summed up Switched at Birth, saying, “People are always going to remember it as, ‘Oh, that’s the sign language show’. And um, we’re all very proud of that.”

The Groundbreaking Series Returns for its Fifth and Final Season
After a transformative 10-month trip to China, Bay and Daphne return home upon receiving disturbing news on the winter premiere of “Switched at Birth,” airing TUESDAY, JANUARY 31 (9:00 – 10:00 p.m. EST), on Freeform.
Daphne and Bay are so enthralled with China that they stay longer than anticipated, but after 10 months, they get an emergency call and drop everything to return home.
Once there, Daphne tries to integrate herself back into campus life but finds that things have changed without her. Bay is mixed up about her feelings towards Emmett who is struggling with his own problems. Meanwhile, Kathryn and John quarrel over her job and Regina feels guilty about a secret tryst.
“The Call” was written by Lizzy Weiss and directed by Allan Arkush.

While the show’s premise is about two teen girls who discover they were switched at birth, Deaf Culture features prominently in the family drama series. Switched at Birth has always featured deaf and hard-of-hearing actors, and ASL, as well as hearing actors and spoken English (and Spanish).

I do watch “Switched at Birth” TV series, and I plan to watch the fifth and final season, as well. Freeform should have renewed the show for a sixth season. I am disappointed that Sean Berdy and his character Emmett did not find a more prominent role in the series. In all my years of TV watching, Sean Berdy is the most talented actor I have ever encountered. To discover him in Season 1, and then to have his character virtually disappear from all of the remaining seasons, was heartbreaking. I watch Switched at Birth too, Hadley and I love it. I agree that Berdy should have been a main character for the run of the series. As Emmett Bledsoe, he is absolutely compelling. I loved his relationships with Daphne, Bay, and Toby.
