Showtime has decided to cancel The Borgias after three seasons. The low-rated drama’s last episode will air on June 16th.
The Borgias follows the story of Pope Alexander (Jeremy Irons) and his struggle to maintain his power at the turn of the 16th century. The historical drama’s large cast also includes François Arnaud, Holliday Grainger, Joanne Whalley, Lotte Verbeek, David Oakes, Sean Harris, Peter Sullivan, Simon McBurney, Steven Berkoff, Aidan Alexander, Julian Bleach, Thure Lindhardt, Gina McKee, and Colm Feore.
Season three of The Borgias premiered in April and thus far the show’s been averaging about a half a million viewers for each episode’s first airing.
There had been talk of wrapping up the show’s ongoing storylines with a movie instead of a fourth season but that’s not happening.
Still, series creator Neil Jordan says that, “For a variety of reasons we won’t be doing a fourth season, but, ‘The Prince’ [the last episode], when I wrote it and shot it, did seem like the end of a journey for the family. Whatever bonded them as a family dies in this episode, and the center of the drama for me was always the family. I want to thank Showtime and David Nevins for their unstinting support over the last three years, and look forward to working with them in the future.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that The Borgias has been cancelled? Were you hoping there would be a fourth season or a movie?
What a disappointment. The final episode was so weak, it didn’t wrap anything up. We deserve more. Showtime should have promoted the show more. It was Showtime that failed not the series.
There’s a campaign with thousands of fans asking Showtime to reconsider. There are a LOT of fans pissed off Showtime has already taken notice.

I cannot believe this fantastic show ended without finishing the reign of the Borgia pope. What a disappointment and a letdown. I always depend on these historical shows for decent television viewing, the trash on regular television is is not with wasting time on. I wish you would do a two hour finale, not leave us hanging. IMy husband and I have so enjoyed the series.
Very disappointed. This period in Italian history was an amazing time. It goes to show how dumb Americans are getting. No interest in anything esp. history. A very entertaining way to learn something. Shame, shame, shame!
I’m sooooo desapointed! Very bad decision ! The show was exceptionnal!
Why? Why did they do this to us?? THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF??? Are you kidding me! I am deeply saddened. 🙁 This is my favorite show. The least Showtime could do is to make the movie so loyal viewers like myself are not left hanging and get to see it to the end. We deserve that much!
I’ll cancel Showtime. You just lost a customer!
What a great show.
Could have watched this drama unfold for many seasons.
Sad that it’s ending.
I will be very sorry to see the show go off. I looked forward to it every week, and when it
Was off,I couldn’t, wait for it to come back.My whole family feels the same way.
I am very sorry to see an end of the story, I have enjoyed the program. I hope they will change their minds but somehow I doubt that they will. I see little reason to pay for Showtime, this was one of only two shows I watch on it, and they are going to be canceling that show too. So maybe it is time to save my money and move on to one of the other PFV sites.
The Borgias is my favorite series on TV. How can reality television thrive and shows like this die? Time to cancel Showtime.
I will miss The Borgias so much. One of my favourite shows. I was looking forward to Cesare finally coming in to his own and becoming a great general. Ah well, I guess I’ll just have to imagine what that would have been like. Such great characters, and so brilliantly played. Fantastic writing and direction.
Boo! So bummed…LUVED the show! What a waste of time when shows don’t follow thru! Want a season 4!
I will definitely cancel show time now, how can you wrap up all of that drama in one hour. What an amazing show that had me looking forward to Sunday night. Shame on you Showtime.
