If you’ve been counting the days until the return of The Event, you’ll need to add seven days to that figure. As suspected, NBC has pushed back the return of the ratings-challenged series by one week.
Earlier today, we reported that the peacock network had cut The Cape’s order from 13 to 10 episodes. The Event was originally supposed to return on February 28th and that would have left NBC with two leftover episodes of The Cape. Since they’ve already paid for them, it looks like the network execs want to air them. The last two installments of The Cape’s first (and likely only) season will air on February 28th.
Then, on March 7th, The Event will return with a two hour event of its own. That will leave nine episodes of The Event for the show’s first, and very possibly only, season.
The show currently ranks in the middle of NBC’s shows. It started out strong but soon started dropping viewers like crazy. The last four original episodes from November averaged a poor 1.7 rating in the demo. The Event will be returning from a three month hiatus and extended breaks like that have rarely if ever helped a struggling show’s ratings.
As a sidenote, this all means that ratings-challenged Chuck will get sidelined for at least two weeks, likely returning on March 14th.
What do you think? Will the week’s delay hurt The Event or will it benefit from have a two-hour episode? Or does any of it matter at this point?

I was not sure that I was going to stick with the show , do to all of the time warps. 6 months ahead, 9 months ago, 2 years ago. I was sure that I was going to get lost , but I stuck with it , and am glad that I did. PLEASE go at least one more season , amybe 2. I’m not sure you can stretch the story that much , but am looking forward to an outragous ending.
My boyfriend and I don’t even like episodic tv, but we both agreed on The Event. NBC needs a rethink. This was good TV. But perhaps the drop in ratings was the fancy flashback sequences…. which I liked, but I agree with previous comments, they were a bit confusing. We hulu’d the shows and watched them serveral times to make sure we understood the plot, not everyone wants to do that. But, I will watch again in March, and no I don’t like waiting, and yes, it hurts ratings. We all have busy lives and who can remember that plot… Read more »
Totally agree with all of the above comments. Great shows come on and then after one or two seasons they get cancelled for ratings alone. Everyone is in it for the almighty $. You see it in sports, business…everywhere. It seems like any program that dares to make you think or is somewhat intriguing loses to mindless sitcoms and reality shows that cater to audiences that enjoy seeing people get the best of each other at the loser’s expense.
MY FIANCE’ AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE EVENT!! WE THINK ITS AWESOME AND ARE TRULY DISAPPOINTED THAT WE HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER WEEK TO SEE THE TWO HOUR EPISODE!! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST DRAMA SCI-FI SHOWS THAT NBC HAS AIRED IN A LONG TIME. I BELIEVE THAT THE VIEWERS SHOULD DECIDE IF A SHOW IS WORTH STAYING ON AIR AND NOT NBC. AFTERALL, WE ARE THE ONES THAT WATCH IT FAITHFULLY EACH WEEK. WE CAN’T WAIT TO FIND OUT WHAT THE EVENT IS? PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW!!
“The Event” was a fantastic show! I hope it will continue for next season. I still don t know what the event is. I want to find out.
I too think the TV execs drop the ball by having good a series then a long wait for the continuation. That sucs and you willl lose veiwers.
THE EVENT IS AWESOME. I CANT WAIT FOR ITS RETURN. PLEASE WILL SOMEONE EXPLAIN IT TO ME , WHY EVERYTIME THERE IS A NEW TV SERIES , THAT IS WELL LIKED, THEY ALWAYS WANT TO TAKE IT OFF. SEEMS TO ME THAT TV STATION DONT REALY CARE WHAT THE VIEWERS LIKE. I AM SO SICK AND TIRED HEARING ” BUT THE RATINGS ARE NOT GOOD” I CAN MAKE A LIST OF TV PROGRAMS THAT ARE STILL AIRED, THAT ARE NOT WORTH LOOKING AT.BUT YET THERE ARE STILL ON. WHAT THEY SHOULD DO IS HAVE US VOTE ON LINE, OR TEXT,… Read more »
The show is such a let down…I had high hopes for something good and I got this show. So many things wrong with it to list. I believe the show was a joke to the producer, did anyone notice in the first show how the pilot had 2 different uniforms on??? One he was a pilot then a 4 star general. Can anyone figure out all the flash forward and backwards of the story line? Just junk not going to watch it again and hope it dies with just one season.
I agree with all the above comments. Every time a good show comes out, NBC cancels it. How do we petition networks to keep shows like 24, Heros, Kings, The Event, Stargate, etc….. Do the “Neilsen Ratings” take into consideration that we DVR everything? Are the “Nielsens tracker ratings” only in the homes of 80 yr old woman, and Reality tv fans? I find it hard to believe that the ratings for “The Event” are as mediocre as the imply. Every person that I work with in a huge hospital are all in love with it. And all there friends… Read more »
I LOVE THIS SHOW! It is the best thing on TV in years that marrys drama with SciFi. I really hope enough people start watching after the boring stuff thats been on TV since it’s been on hiatus. The Event and the Good Wife are the only two shows I watch on the regular networks. Everything else good is on cable!
I love The Event and as commented above, every time a network puts on a show that I love, they make it too hard to see it. This layoff has been horrible and probably has stopped any momentum it might have had. I’ll watch, of course, but I also expect the networks to let me down again. Remember the fabulous “Jericho?” What a bummer that was, too.
Finding a show both my girlfriend and I are interested in, is not the easiest thing. And we both got hooked on The Event, we want more. The 3 month break has been a complete let down.
I’ve been waiting for the next show for weeks, and I’m very disappointed that we’ve had to wait so long and that it might not be continued. I found it engaging and intriguing.
Every time I find a show I like, it seems as though it gets cancelled. I’m almost afraid to get interested in one now because I think that I’ll just be disappointed when it goes away.
I watched The Event for the first time today. Watched all ten episodes on demand at one sitting. I want more, but I also want an ending.
