To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

This is the best show a US network has produced in years. So much of it is already assimilated into popular culture it’s hard to believe…..NO second series? They will be showing reruns of this for years. Thanks to Bradley Whitford for producing a TV show worth looking forward to every week. When’s the last time that happened. Who on Earth are these ratings people anyway.
I loved the show. I can’t believe it was cancelled. USA should snap it up!
this suck big time…….. Bring it back!!!!!
Something seems crimey here. My daughter and I loved to watch this show together and will miss it. If it appears on cable we will watch again for sure.
I loved the dialog and quirky characters. Here’s hoping they bring it back. I’m a loyal cable watcher as I think they offer better shows, ie The Closer (which I will sorely miss!) so please add it to TNT or USA.
Sorry to see it go. It was a fun show. If all three networks want to get rid of something, get rid of so-called reality TV. It’s run its course and isn’t aging well anymore.
this sucks… It was the most enjoyable hour of television on in a loooong time..
whatever… how is this off and survivor still on I guess I do not understand this world..
This was one of my favorite shows on TV. I am so sad to hear that it is not coming back. One of the few shows where I laughed out loud consistently. Great writing and great cast.
I thought this show was hilarious, always looked forward to the next episode. Dans old partner coming back was was one of the funniest episodes. I fought my husband at first who wanted to watch this show cause I thought it looked stupid and corny. but after a bit I grew to love it and it became one of my favorites. I can’t believe it’s canceled. first you cancel ’24’ now ‘The Good Guys’. Please don’t take ‘Lie to me away’!!!.
Another great show dies. This show was hilarious. I am 36, and I really enjoyed watching this show. I didn’t think the first episode or two was THAT great, but it did yet better. Most people I talked to about the show though never even heard of it. Having a show like this in a Friday night time slot is just stupid anyway. I wish another network would have picked this show up. Oh well, I hope to see these guys in other shows of this quality.
We are sooo sad to hear the show was cancelled. We couldn’t always watch it when it was on due to it’s time slot but we were loyal DVR watchers. I hope to hear it will be brought back on cable at a different time.
I am in the demographic and I loved the show! I never got to see it on tv but I discovered it on Hulu and watched every episode. If there is anyway to keep this show I would LOVE to continue watching it, I even got my family to watch with me a few times.
I loved the show… sorry I’m not in the demographic; I’m 64. I’ve been looking for it. Finally did a search and found this. I was surprised at Whitford’s character, having seen him on West Wing. He’s definitely well-rounded. And what’s this network bs about putting the show in the worst scheduling spot. By all means put an anchor on the runner and send him into the race… I seem to remember a show called ‘Star Trek’ was a loser… Wonder what ever happened to it? If cable is more quirky, put it there and give it a chance.
His just sucks that another good comedy has bit the dust. FOX needs to wake up.t
I’m a retired officer/detective and can and did relate to the show and fun. Hate to say it but some of it was kind of realistic. It had a “feel good thing also” about what it meant to get the “RUSH” of a bust.
BRING IT BACK to cable and a good time slot. It can make it!
