To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Wow. what a disappointment. anything original isn’t given much chance anymore. I really loved this show. I’m sick and tired of network and cable programmers telling me what I ought to like. I’m ditching the networks and going streaming.
Disgusted that Fox canceled this show. It was the best.
This is a huge disappointment. We loved this show! Looked forward to friday nights just to watch…. This show had everything and such a great cast. Any chance you’ll reconsider? Please????
I loved this show! I kept waiting for it to come on and now to find out it’s canceled??? Maybe because it wasn’t crude enough or not enough provocative scenery…It was hilarious and I will miss it! There is a hole in my Friday night tv watching!!! Guess I will have to be subjected to mindless “reality” tv and watch my IQ drop.
My husband & I loved this show. We were really looking forward to the next season!!
Good Guys was great! A fun comedy that was halfway clean. I think it may have been the only one on tv. Our family has more quotes from Dan than any other tv show. I want to buy the season on DVD.
I LOVED this show!!! Just like “Pushing Daisies” and “Firefly” it was a quirky, entertaining show with unexpected plot twists and great humor. Too bad it will be replaced with crap, more than likely. I am truly sad about this. 🙁
Our whole family loved the Good Guys! It was hilarious, and we particularly loved the device of time spinning backward & forward . We only discovered the show in September, but watched every week from then until the finale. We had hoped that the show would resume in the winter or possibly later this year. Bummer……………
Is it really so surprising? It was a good show – of course they cancelled it. TV viewers these days have a peeping tom mentality. That’s why reality shows do so well. Give me a good escapist show anyday!
Lets bust some punks
Exactly Denise, we felt the same way, i guess the same crappy shows are the only ones that the networks will give a chance to.
I am still mad as $#%* that fox cancelled ‘The Good Guys’!!! What is wrong with people these days? A show like that gets cancelled when stupid shows like kitchen nightmares, celebrity apprentice and survivor are still being aired!! Hopefully, some network will pick this show up and air it in a decent time slot. Maybe, people will figure out what good tv shows are supposed to be and not the nonsense the networks think we want to see!!!!
love good guys. they alwy’s cancel the good shows and put on crap reality shows
Why are all the fresh, fun shows taken off the air? This was one of my very favorites! My husband and I are really going to miss this quirky show. Any chance of some one else picking it up?
So, this is how TV will work from here on out. Networks will never have the guts to look at a good show, say “quality will find its level” and let a show run for a bit to build an audience. There is room on TV for 25 shows about horny teens but zero room for shows that ask the audience to settle in for the full hour and watch a unique character or two. Looking back to some of the classic TV of the past, I wonder if any of them would survive today. Show about a bunch of… Read more »
