To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

No show I like stays on for very long. I must be bad luck. I’m going to start watching shows I hate and get THEM cancelled!
This show was great. A non-stop fun, hour long comedy with a non-traditional time line that you can’t get enough of. Fox screwed the pooch on this one. The marketing and time slots sucked resulting in poor ratings.
This better be a rumor. The Good Guys, House M.D., and 24 are the only shows that FOX can be proud of. I still can’t believe they cancelled 24. FOX is the absolute worst company. They keep $#!tty shows like American Idol, Bob’s Burgers, Bones, Fringe, Glee, Hell’s Kitchen, Human Target, Kitchen Nightmares, Lie to Me, Master Chef, and So You Think You Can Dance for the masses, but they won’t keep any quality TV shows. House M.D. is the only show that’s left on FOX. I wish it was on another station because then I could boycott FOX all… Read more »
Magnus, couldn’t agrre more. Although I don’t live in the States I wacth lot of american tv and some show are just awful.. the good guys instead was simply amazing.. has been a while since I don’t feel so bad about a show cancelation. Here, in Argentina they run the show on FX so I hope this channel starts doing it there. long life to The Good Guys!!! (sorry for my english =)
South America also loves the Good Guys!
Greetings from Brazil
Truly an awesome show. Shameful to let it go. I think it helds its own without all the crap other shows use to keep up ratings.
What a shame! This show was, by far, the most entertaining and hysterical show on broadcast TV. The highlight of my TV viewing week was sitting down to see what kind of mess Dan Stark was going to stir up this week and what outragous outcome was surely to come of it. With a different time slot and better promotion by Fox this show should have been a big hit.
Hate this news. Loved this show. Dan and the mustache were just finding their stride. I am really bummed.
Show was great. Was truly my favorite thing on TV. FOX…
Somehow I blame Sarah Palin.
You don’t have any idea how sorry I am reading this news! I just love this show! I’m from Argentina and here we love this type of humour.. This is an incredible couple and Brad Withford definitely steals the show! I’m frustraded now! aww… Hope you well Good Guys!
I’m really sorry to hear it’s been canceled! I loved the quirky humor, the characters, the plots, and even the funny intro music. I was really hoping for a second season… What a disappointment. It was my favorite show of the week.
Please say this is not true. My husband and I enjoy the show and thought it was so much fun. What do the people want “more housewives”. We can only hope it gets picked up by another network. PLEASE
It took me a while but I started to like this show.
I think it at least ended well. The season finale, which turned out to be the series finale, was pretty good. I had hoped it would have a second season, but at least they won’t be making episodes that I’ll miss (I don’t have expanded cable, just the network channels). It’s too bad to see GOOD SHOWS like this one suffer and end, even with great fan support as I’ve seen on other sites.
Hate hate Fox–no patience! What a funny funny show. Bradley Whitford is amazing and Colin Hanks is the perfect straight man. Fox, please let the show try to go to cable!
This show is fantastic, the UK public would eat it up. Clearly too quirky for the average American. Stark is a god.
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE.
They always cancel the good shows.
