To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I may be arriving a bit late to this discussion but I am severely disappointed nonetheless! The Good Guys is a great show and deserves some time to see if can really catch on. From the first time my wife and I saw the show we loved everything about it. Not to mention that it is a different spin on the “Buddy Cop” type of show. Small crime cops that always stumble onto bigger cases……it was brilliant just to see how this would get messed up each week for the “crime fighting” duo. This is a great, great show that… Read more »
What a shame Good Guys was cancelled. I think it’s the wrong decision. It was quirky, a little bit silly, funny, had lots of action, the characters were sympathetic – what more could anyone want. I guess it was just a bit too different from the usual formulaic junk that’s on TV these days. I suppose TV is just destined to become one big reality show – cheap for the networks to put together and plays to the dumbest viewers…
I only got to see the last few episodes. I accidentally discovered the show one night in November, 2010 and LOVED it! To my dismay…it was cancelled shortly thereafter and I only got to see about 5 of the 21 episodes!! IF FOX, or another network picked it up, I would definitely watch it. How about some reruns??????? Where can I buy season 1 on DVD?
I looked forward to Fridays and watching the Good Guys. It was one of the funnier shows on the air. I couldn’t believe when it was cancelled.
This was the best comedy on TV. Typical – network puts it in a bad time slot, and then can’t figure out why it didn’t catch on. Too bad – had more people been exposed to the show at a better slot, it would have really been a hit. Great writing, great acting, and extremely funny.
Bring it back!
I love this show and am so sad they are cancelling it. This show was so funny and such a great break from reality. Long live Dan Stark and his starkyness.
Our family looked forward to this show every week. The characters had great chemistry, and Whitford was absolutely hysterical in the lead role. This truly was one of the funniest shows we’ve ever seen, and we are very disappointed to find out it’s not returning.
My wife and I waited for a couple 0f months for word when The Good Guys would continue. We Googled and were devastated to find our favorite comedy was cancelled. It’s hilarious!!!!!! Come on Fox get real, and bring it back. Everyone we told about the show agreed.
Really can’t see why anyone wouldn’t watch The Good Guys…..My husband and I have been waiting every Friday night for it’s return. Thought after the Idol thing was over that it would be back. Loved the show and Fox needs to reconsider that choice !
My husband and I are sooo disappointed that they’re not doing a second season! This was our favorite show and thought for sure that it would continue. Considering the other awful shows out there, this was a breath of fresh air…I guess people are just too stupid to understand good comedy…next thing they’ll do is cancel” Modern Family”!
Why can’t you give The Good Guys a second chance?! It is so entertaining and different from the same ol’ crap on TV now. This world needs more humor and this show has it along with fun, excitement and a great cast!
I miss this show so much – please bring it back! There is nothing good to watch on TV anymore!
I can’t believe it’s cancelled!! The first time I saw the show, I didn’t like it, but the more I watched it, the more I found it hilarious! It takes a little while to catch on to all of the little jokes and quirky mannerisms that the characters have. I’m so upset there’s not going to be a second season!
I hate that they cancelled the show. The GOOD GUYS was one of better shows on FOX TV. BRING IT BACK PLEASE;;;;;;;;;;;;;
