TV show description:
A period drama, this TV show is set in downtown New York City in 1900. It revolves around the Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses, and staff who work there. They push the boundaries of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.
A brilliant surgeon, Doctor John Thackery (Clive Owen) is pioneering new methods in the field, despite nursing his secret and severe addiction to cocaine. He leads a team of physicians that include his protégé Doctor Everett Gallinger (Eric Johnson); young Doctor Bertie Chickering Jr. (Micahel Angarano); and Doctor Algernon Edwards (André Holland), a promising surgeon of color who’s been recently thrust upon him.
Others at the hospital include benefactor Captain August Robertson and his daughter Cornelia (Juliet Rylance); surly ambulance driver Tom Cleary (Chris Sullivan); fresh-faced nurse from the country Lucy Elkins (Eve Hewson); crooked hospital administrator Herman Barrow (Jeremy Bobb); and Sister Harriet (Cara Seymour), a nun who isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
There’s also health inspector Jacob Speight (David Fierro), a coarse man who’s not above taking a bribe to steer a patient to a particular hospital.
Episode #20 — This Is All We Are
Thackery eschews Zinberg’s advice at Mt. Sinai and opts for a dramatic, and risky, alternative course of action. Cornelia confronts Henry about his role in the family business; Barrow defends his actions at the hospital construction site; Gallinger considers a job opportunity; Cleary refuses to give up on Harriet.
First aired: December 18, 2015.
What do you think? Do you like The Knick TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season?
I’ve been siting on The Knick’s return!!! Why???? Does everything good get canceled?
Noooooo! I’ve been waiting and wondering when it’s coming back only to have JUST discovered it was cancelled! I’m so heartbroken as this show was simply outstanding in all respects. ☹️
I am heartbroken to know that The Knick has been cancelled. The acting was phenomenal and I found the info on early medicine to be fascinating and endlessly interesting. It sparked so many personal inquiries. I was attached to the characters and anxious to know how the story would progress. Too lose this show when so many other shows that prevail have generic story lines is a shame.
I totally agree with all that you said and watched the show from the very beginning. I am a Registered Nurse and learned so much about early surgeries, use of anesthesia and hospitals in general. Ether was first used @ Massachusetts General, Boston, and the operating “theater” was laid out the same way. It is historically preserved, called the Ether Dome and is in one of the original buildings. History was made there and surgery advanced greatly with the use of anesthesia. I feel quite sure The Knick was based on MGH.
This is one of the finest example of “TV shows that showcase the true spirit of medicine”(apart from House M.D.). In essentiality, it portrays the lives of people who are often missed out in a TV show(or a movie, for that matter). This includes nurses, ambulance-men, managers, donors, and other non-medical staff that are quintessential for efficient functioning of a medical institution. It is a period drama, set in the New York of the early 20th century. What makes this show different from others of the genre is the open(and often, blunt) discussion of several societal issues, viz. drug-addiction, contraception,… Read more »
Love, love The Knick, so much suspense, great that they get the stories from the 1900 newspapers. I don’t want Thackery to die though, the show needs him. Can’t wait to see what happened to Cornelia leaving NY and how Lucy has changed, wow!!! Also, Harriet, is she going to marry Cleary? Can’t wait, please don’t ever get rid of The Knick…
Excellent acting. Fast moving pace. A head above most TV swill. Would like to see another season.
Great show. Keep it for another season.
I love this show. It is so original, gritty and smart. Terrific actors, great plot and character development.
I love this show!! It’s a breath of fresh air, it’s real something that you can watch over and over. Shows how things were back then. We’ve come so far in medicine, so far as humans. Bring back the KNICK!!
The Knick is fantastic. I thought there was an opportunity to show the history of drugs through medicine and the change in opinion. I also thought it would show women’s progression in the medical field.
I love the procedures the improved in early American history. Please renew series. It will be hard to replace Clive Owens. Fabulous. Great casting!
The show is dead. They just killed off the main character as I doubt any writer can bring him back after his over the top attempted bowel resection with a spinal! I agree that Season 1 was full of interesting and totally believable accounts of what medicine was like at that time. However, they did not fully make the story line as believable in Season 2. I’m an R.N. and followed this show with great interest for many reasons. The surgical theater at The Knick resembled the Ether Dome at Mass General in Boston and that was an amazing place… Read more »
