CBS has pulled the plug on one of their family comedies but it’s not the one you’d expect. They haven’t cancelled The McCarthys yet but have dropped The Millers after four airings into its second season.
Set in Leesburg, Virginia, The Millers follows a local TV news reporter (Will Arnett) who’s been hiding his recent divorce from his parents. When they hear the news, his dad (Beau Bridges) his mom (Margo Martindale) are inspired to separate and each move in with their kids. The rest of the sitcom’s cast includes J.B. Smoove, Jayma Mays, Nelson Franklin, Lulu Wilson, and Sean Hayes.
Debuting last fall, The Millers aired on Thursday nights and greatly benefitted from having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in. The comedy’s ratings were very good — but a large percentage of viewers tuned out between the two programs. It averaged a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.9 million viewers.
This season, CBS moved the sitcom to Monday nights where it has 2 Broke Girls as a lead-in. Despite the addition of Sean Hayes to the cast, it’s been struggling in that timeslot and hasn’t been helping new drama Scorpion. It’s currently averaging a 1.7 rating with 7.28 million — a season-to-season decline of more than 30%.
The cast and crew of The Millers will reportedly finish filming one more episode before shutting down production. A new episode is scheduled for this Monday night but, depending on the ratings, it may be pulled after that. Reruns of The Big Bang Theory performed well in the 8:30pm timeslot before Millers returned.
CBS has the fifth season of Mike & Molly waiting in the wings but will likely wait until after the holidays to give it a proper launch.
It’s been a particularly bad season for new sitcoms thus far. Bad Judge and A to Z were cancelled on NBC while Selfie and Manhattan Love Story have been canned by ABC. Mulaney on FOX is sure to be cancelled and The McCarthys is sure to be dropped by CBS as well. Only ABC’s newbie Black-ish is doing well.
What do you think? Do you like The Millers? Do you think it should have been moved back to Thursdays?
I loved The Miller’s. Great cast! It had a very relatable storyline. I had my mother living with me this past year and many people I know do too. It reminded me of All in The Family and I expected it to be a long running show. CBS…you don’t know a good thing when you have it!
WOW…I am really disappointed with the cancellation of The Millers. I loved this show. Will Arnett is adorable while Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges were absolutely hysterical. I laughed out loud a those 2 many times. Maybe another network can pick it up. Too bad because there are so many other sitcoms that are not the least bit funny.
very ,very disappointed-it was a great comedy-I GUESS WE NEED MORE MURDERS.
That was a funny show with great actors. Didn’t need canned laughter to make it work like 2bg. The premise was great and so was the writing. Nothing like moving a show that works to a different day to screw up a good thing. I’m pissed cbs.
I am from India and i know a lot of people who watch this show!! you need to bring it back!! I feel bad for will arnet , he is such a great actor! First arrested development and now this… And both shows were amazing!!
I am so disappointed that the Millers has been cancelled. I cannot believe that the McCarthys is still on and the best one has been cancelled. Just like A & E cancelling Longmire, my faith in the TV hierarchy is nil.
The Miller’s is awesome I think they’re making a big mistake canceling the show. I can’t believe 2 broke girls is still on that show sucks.
it sucks that the millers are being cancelled, maybe another network could pick it up look forward to watching it every week, about ready to stop watching cbs.
I looked forward to watching the Millers, I thought it was a very funny show and everyone of the characters were great. I was shocked to hear they were cancelled, there were alot of other shows that I thought were boring. Please CBS BRING THEM BACK, the show is a down to earth family , how they all got along.
I’m done watching new shows. As soon as you find something you like, it’s pulled. What viewer wants to commit to a show the network won’t commit too. Give viewers a chance. Don’t mess around with when it comes on. You lost millions of viewers after you changed the night The Miller’s came on. How many viewers didn’t know the night changed. Why did you move it from BBT to 2 Broke Girls (how did that show make it several seasons?) I’ve watched a few 2BG and did not like it. Does it have enough viewers to be a lead… Read more »
This is a great show. CBS needs to do whatever to keep it on ….or let someone else pick it up. I have NO problem watching it on a different channel. And we like the McCarthy’s too. Their fighting and meaness is like a lot of real families and funny. To be honest both of these were far funnier than Blackish. We tried that for two weeks and gladly gave it up!!
Finally Will Arnett has a GREAT GREAT show with excellent co stars and they can it?? F$&ing a$$holes cbs
Lemme guess because Chuck Lorre didn’t make it ? CHUCK NORRIS should kick cbs and Lorres ASS’!!!! BOOOOOOOOOO!!
Let another station pick it up and suck it cbs
I love this show. What is wrong with CBS. Please wake up. Maybe they should move it back to Thursday. I love Sean Hayes, he just started….Shame on you CBS.
Love this show, canceling it is a travesty! The McCarthy’s is way worse! I find it hard ti believe that all that talent is going to waste. Get new writers!!!!
I love that show… I’ve already got 2 new people watching it. How many ratings to they need, it sounded like plenty of people were watching it… CBS is stupid for cancelling this.
