On Monday, ABC unveiled their new daytime show, The Revolution, and the ratings were anything but revolutionary. One has to wonder if the execs are second-guessing their decision to cancel One Life to Live.
Per the ratings for Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, The Revolution debuted to a 1.9 rating. That was a drop of 21% from its lead-in which averaged a 2.4 rating. One year earlier, now-cancelled One Life to Live was averaging a 2.3 rating.
For the show’s second airing, The Revolution did even worse — dropping 16% to a 1.6 rating.
While it’s too early to tell if The Revolution will be a flop, this certainly wasn’t a positive start — especially considering Monday was a holiday and more people were home than is typical for a weekday. On the positive side for the network, new series is cheaper to produce than the soap opera that it replaced.
Created by J.D. Roth, sometime TV host and an executive producer on The Biggest Loser, The Revolution is a lifestyle talk show that shows five month personal makeovers in five days. The TV series is hosted by Ty Pennington, Tim Gunn, therapist Dr. Tiffanie Davis Henry, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, and exercise guru Harley Pasternak.
What do you think? Have you watched The Revolution? Do you think that it will be a success, even if it doesn’t perform as well as One Life to Live? Could this help save General Hospital?

ABC =ABSOLUTELY BORING CRAP!
We have to watch whatever is on the competition, hopefully another daytime drama to send the message that this is what the audience wants to watch. If I want to be educated I will read a paper or watch educational tv. When I turn on network tv I want to be entertained with scripted drama/comedy. Otherwise my tv is not on.
I have watched the ABC soaps since I was 9 and I am 42 now, OLTL was always my favorite but I watched all three faithfully. In elementary school I used to rush home after schoolt to catch the last few minutes of OLTL and a full GH episode and always spent those 3hours during summer watching all three. In collage I would watch OLTL in the student center between classes. When I was home with my babies 12-3 was nap time so I could watch my soaps. When I went to work I recorded them on the VCR and… Read more »
I do not feel bad at all about the poor ratings for the Revolution. Perhaps, if Frons at the time of his tenure at ABC, should have done surveys like NBC just did with Days. Were there problems with these two shows at times, yes. Instead of trying to appease and improve the shows for the audience, this person destroyed them. He however underestimated the power of the audience who are consumers. OLTL had close to 4 million viewers, AMC 3.5 million. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to streamline budgets by product placement, getting a pulse on what viewers… Read more »
I will NEVER watch ABC/Disney again since they canceled OLTL. That was a big mistake. As well as the companies’ refusal to sell the rights back to Agnes Nixon. They have lost my respect since they called their viewers “dogs that can be trained to watch whatever they tell us to”
You know what, if I was a dog, I would take a big bite out of ABC.
The Spew and The Revolution should be canceled. Bring back my OLTL and I’ll be a loyal viewer again!
I am not surprised at all! ABC sorely underestimated the soap fans and our sincere passion for the genre. You can not replace families we have known for decades with yet another self help show reminding us how we need to improve ourselves. We want a story line we can invest in and enjoy and forget about our cares, not be reminded how we need to change. I will NEVER watch The Chew or Revolution – NEVER!!!
ABC/Disney Execs….you get what you pay for. Cheaper is not always better. You sold your soul to the devil and here is your reward; ratings are worse than ever. I hope the gamble was worth it. The worst thing is that many people have lost confidence in your brand. Disney is just as ruthless as all the other big corporations. It’s plain to see that there is no regard for what the viewers want, you broadcast what is cheap to produce and you hope nobody notices. I get the bottom line concept, but how is this better? Surely there was… Read more »
Rachel ray, the chew, the view, the revolution……equal BORING T.V… Bring back the soaps!!!!!
The Revolution and The Chew should be taken off, and One Life To Live come back on. These shows are all the same thing, and we already have cooking shows on the food network thats where they belong! We already have weight loss shows like The Biggest Loser. Should have left the soaps alone because the ones that replaced them with are awful! Bring back One Life to Live, and you will get your better ratings back!
I have been watching the revolution, giving them a chance . When watching on Jan 20th when Elisabeth Hasselbeck was on, she showed a Gluden free Mac & Cheese. After surfing around for over an hour on the web site looking for a section that allows you get the recipes with no results. I would think that any recipes that are shown on the show would be made available through their web page. How can they expect to teach their viewers a new way of thinking when they are unable to access what may give them the modivation to even… Read more »

Revolution..one word…zzzzzzz
The show won’t last. Just like the chew is barely surviving. Abc you took a generation of soaps lasting over 30 yrs just for 2 wasted shows. Good job abc taking away womans soap operas. Maybe you should get the old people from yrs ago to be on the soaps that are still alive and have storytime for them to get on the air. People don’t like change. Abc you will only go down once you take GH off too. What’s next the night time shows like greys? The practice? Very disappointed in abc.
I concur with all of the “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” fans. The new shows are in no way a replacement for the legacy of those soaps. The idea that you could remove the soaps and replace them with some inane, repetitive ‘lifestyle” shows was ridiculous! I vowed to never watch the chew (boo) or the revolution (uck!). Not only that, I have vowed to never watch a new ABC show again! If I wasn’t already watching a show that I still feel invested in, I will never add another show to my viewing line-up. Why should… Read more »
Goes to show the “powerful” people don’t have a clue!!!!! Should have left well enough alone. I loved One Life to Live. I will never, never have those two shows on my tv. Made a mistake didn’t you ABC???
The comments regarding the Revolution etc. display an extreme level of closed mindedness. Must be watching too many soaps. Just about everybody says they won’t watch the show but has already an opinion. It’s supposed to be the other way around. The networks decided to phase out the soaps, because the audience is slowly but surely dwindling. Makes sense to quit, while you are ahead. As to the comments that there are already too many shows like the Revolution I would say obviously not enough. Americans suffer from an obesity epidemic and lead very unhealthy lives, mentally and physically. The… Read more »
You’re kidding, right?
If the food producers would stop poisoning our food with growth hormones maybe people wouldn’t be growing wider. Don’t put all overweight people into the same basket, some of those people are overweight because of other issues besides food. And if you aren’t overweight, what other issues do you have, nobody is perfect. Stop judging people based on how they look.
