It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
Loved it! What family drama! Shows how one incident can effect and play out into so many lives. I don’t think the show was given a decent chance. Kinda bounced around some. Not nearly enough trailers. Hope it comes back.
The final episode made it all worthwhile.
Please bring it back..it was a very good series me and my husband watch together.
I really enjoyed this show and all it’s subplots.
I really enjoyed this series. After just completing the last episode, I went hunting for a season 2 air date and am disappointed to see there won’t be one. This family was so interesting and refreshing, and I’m very sad to see it go. Netflix, hear my cry and pick up this series!
I enjoyed the show. Thought the plot was ecellent and brought together a great cast.
LOVED it! It was so good. I like REAL shows with REAL life stories. I am really sorry that it wasn’t picked up for a second season. Bummer!
This show was underrated and not given the hype it needed! Great show with real character . Loved how each week they focused on a different character and its storyline. I, as well as many others enjoyed this series and will miss its characters who we loved to hate and enjoy every week! Bring it back, but make the beginning more appealing so everyone stays tuned!
Horrible show with horrible characters. Ending was a huge letdown. Everybody all lovey dove. At best they should have reprimanded the crazy mother for allowing her child to run wild and what? breast feed until 5? Ugh! Good riddance.
I really like the program it was really life. I especially like the ended because both families got their share of blame. please bring it back.
My husband and I wanted to start watching something new and started the series on Hulu and was so excited that it was so good. I would watch another season, if there was one, but the way EP 8 ended it is hard to determine what another season would be about. But overall it was good while it lasted.
I really enjoyed The Slap. I’d love to see more. Great storyline and excellent characters.
This is a truly quality show. I am extremely disappointed in NBC. For the first time in a LONG time, they have a show that is not totally dumbed down…..to the mindless level of broadcast stations. Hopefully, a SMART HBO SHOWTIME, or maybe NETFLIX will pick this show up. SHAME ON YOU NBC.
Totally agree!
Really agree with the many positive comments. I enjoyed following the series. The story line was excellent with lots to learn. Actors were so good with each staying with their character. Maybe same cast could do another series with a new/different storyline. Writers must be excellent to put together such an engaging piece!
The original Australian series only had one season as well – this is a piece of drama made as a story that is told and that is that, there is no need to make a second series, the story was complete and it was extremely well done.
Not everything needs to keep going until it dies.
