Yogi Bear didn’t have a great opening weekend at the box office. Still, that won’t stop Hollywood from basing live action movies on beloved cartoon characters. After all, The Smurfs movie is coming next summer. In the feature film, the cute little blue characters are chased out of their village and end up landing in Central Park in the Big Apple.
They’ll be voiced by Katy Perry, Anton Yelchin, Alan Cumming, B.J. Novak, Paul Reubens, Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Fred Armisen, Kenan Thompson, John Oliver, Jeff Foxworthy, Gary Basaraba, and Wolfgang Puck. On the live-action side are performers Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofía Vergara, and Hank Azaria as nasty Gargamel.
A new poster for the movie has just been released. Take a look below…
What do you think? Does the plot and poster make you want to see the movie? In theaters or on DVD?
Ugh, no. If they must make a movie about the Smurfs – and I can deal with the fact that they are just fine – it should at least adhere to the basic ideas of the cartoon, which clearly didn’t take place in modern day and definitely not in New York. The humor, from what I’ve seen in the trailer, is also completely different, all filled with pop culture referencess and snarkier than the original, which was very innocent and appealing in its relative timelessness/placelessness.
There’s actually a lot that could be done with a Smurfs movie. But this smurfs.
