There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

i wonder if it was a lack of viewers or obama?
i considered it a great show and actually felt some
pride in America for action like this.
yea, yea i know it was fiction but somewhere
i suspect there are/were groups like “the unit”
with obama’s policies and anti-America stand
it would not surprise me that the white house
ordered the show canceled. since the networks
are bought and paid for, it seems likely they would follow orders.
You’ve got to be kidding me. CBS made a really stupid choice by moving it to Sunday, but it was still one of the bestshows on tv. One less show to watch on CBS.
In order for anything you guys say to really set in, you would actually have to go through with the “never watching CBS again”. There are 15 pages of complaints but how many of you will actually boycott CBS? If all of us do then maybe they might see a slight difference in the viewing of their shows.
Bring back the Unit. Bring Back the Unit. The Unit is the best show on TV. If the Unit is gone, what is left? Big brother, Survivor? Are you kidding me? We are supposed to watch these shows? They aren’t good TV, The Unit is.
When this show was cancelled my family couldn’t believe it. The Unit is the best show on tv. Jonas and that ******* his boss are good tv. It’s the only show on tv that did things I never expected. I’m tired of watching shows and not being surprised. This show had it all. I can’t believe they cancelled it. I understand that the economy is bad and they have to cut. I guess this show was expensive to produce, but ahhhhhhh!
Well, thanks to all the ppl that made this show happen. You will be missed.!
1. A guy show doesn’t do well against Sun Nite Football
2. It’s a top 5 rated show in the UK
3. FOX should take it
The ratings were off because CBS insisted on putting the show in the line up on Sunday night where it was consistently pushed back by as much as 40 minutes because of football games that ran long. Find a new night and the ratings will come back to what we saw in 2006.
Seriously!?!?????!??????
How can you cancel this show? It’s one of 5 shows in the last decade to be able to reach a truly unique and dedicated audience. I LOVED this show! It is easily my favorite show to come out in the last 5 years. PLEASE bring it back!

The unit was 1 out of a few that was excellent and i have all 4 seasons am i was hoping for season 5+ and am very dissapointed at the decision to not continue it.. VERY SAD GREAT SHOW UP THERE WITH THE BEST OF THEM..
i loved this show! it was one of the few that me and my father could actually watch together and agree on
BY FAR MY FAVORITE SHOW ON TV (WE LOVE BURN NOTICE ALSO) PLEASE DO SOMETHING SOMEONE! IT IS AN AWESOME SHOW!!!! I AM BEGGING IF THAT WILL HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to admit, the show was great — the characters, the integrity, the development. I am truly saddened to see it fall to the wayside. More, I sincerely hope someone else picks it up. After all, the production of quality shows are far and few between… Besides, how many SuperStars, or Dancing with the Stars can people stomach before reality really sinks in. People want diversion, but with a taste of reality. From what I’ve seen with this show, they got just that, and more…a morality play to boot…
PK sends…
