There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

It is total crap that this show is cancelled. It was actually one of the better shows on TV amongst all the worthless **** they produce.
Why are we all spending time whining on a blog. Why not fill out this “CBS Feedback Form”? I did. http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php
My husband & I are so disappointed they canceled this excellent show. There’s so much on that’s worthless! What does CBS have that’s worth watching besides NCIS?
CBS used to be my primary TV station but they have done a dis-service to their audience by canceling shows like The Unit. What are you thinking? Get rid of those ridiculous reality shows. It would have been nice to at least give those of us viewers that appreciated the show a chance to have a season finale.
I can’t believe that CBS would cancel one of the best shows on the air, i was waiting for the season premier and it never appeared so i decided to check, what a let down!It was probably the best military show since Combat!Good thing you still have NCIS or i would drop your station like a hot potatoe.
I also have been waiting for The Unit to return and decided to check. I am so very disappointed. This was the best show on tv! I have never commented on anything before but just had to weigh in. The least CBS could do is have a finale.
Are you really kidding about The Unit being cancelled!!! What a waste! We waited all week for that show to come on Sunday evenings. I would rather see Two and a Half Men get cancelled instead. That show was great and really shows how the military love their country!
I can not believe this! This is a great show. It seems that hollywood does not want any military shows on primetime. What is that saying about hollywood? There will always be military so why can’t we have a show on TV about it?

If you really loved your country, and gave a damn about the military, you would not be a liberal, and would not have voted for Obama!
I am not fooled by your drool!
I was a US Navy diver for seven years. Though the show had some Hollywood stunts and drama thrown in for entertainment value, over all I enjoyed the comradery and honor shared between the actors characters, as well as the action. I guess our current socialist leader would object. To those reading this, if you think the president has no influence over the movies being produced, think again. Stand by for more homosexual propaganda films, and shows with a more liberal and socialist view.
Are you kidding me!!!!! This was the best show on TV!! I mean Full house had like nine seasons, what a load a crap!!!!!! Who ever made this decision to cancel probably works for that dink of a president Osama…. whoops, Obama and probably told him the bailout was a good idea!?! Well good job on being bigger idiots, than the president and his staff, CBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and one last thing I am in the military and have served overseas in Iraq. This show was huge over there with the soldiers, just about everyone bought the seasons or at least… Read more »
We are a military family and this was one show that we enjoyed immensely. I’m so disappointed and I can honestly say that I will not be watching any of the other shows on CBS. Not very many shows are out there that really depict the military in a ‘real life’ way, and it’s so unfortunate that civilians have even less to look at to get a clear understanding on what being in the military endures.
I didn’t even know CBS was still on the air for like 15 years. This is why they suck! I’ll check back in another 15 to see what else they prematurely cancel.
My family and I could not wait for this season to start, we never missed a passed episode. We love the plots, concepts and most of all the fact that it pratrayed our men and women in the military. What a mess CBS made of this. BRING IT BACK. With the same actors.
P.S
We are in our 30’s not 50’s.
That was one of the best shows ever how could you cancel it? If I was the director of the Unit I would move to another tv station if I could.
